the rebuilders school that i was sent to , went so far as to design a tool that bolts in place of the starter and measures 'with a dial indicator and a neat lever thing ',dimentions needed for the replacement starter .It cost me $300 bucks, Ive used it once . in the time it takes to set it up i can call the parts store and have them sent the right starter.still not much help, but i think average250 is , good luck, bob
If you guys are running into a parts guy who thinks that the noses are the same between auto matic and manual trannies, find a new parts guy. The starter motors them selves are the same, but the noses are DIFFERANT. Differant enough that it ain't gonna work right if you have the wrong one. And this notion I have seen twice now about the 361/391 FT wheel being smaller is WRONG ! It is bigger. Just ask someone who has both. DF

I can take a picture of my SMALLER 391 flywheel next to a 390 flywheel and show you! Also, If the noses are different on manuals and autos why are the starter alignment plates exactly the same. I have atleast 5 of each manual and auto plates and they are all identical, with the exception of the 391 plate which is different. If the plate is the same and the flexplates and flywheels are the same diameter, reason would suggest the starters are identicle.
I didnt make that comment , only thanked him for the info, as I am now thanking you for the info you provided . Im not up on the tech end of it , except for that carquwst school an employer sent me to .I do know that when I get a starter from them, and it doesnt work right, and they double check the part numbers , their usual coment is , sorry , we will get the right one out right away, but I am trying to learn , which is why I like this site, thanks again and good luck, bob
Dustin, I'd love to see a picture of the small 391FT 'wheel. My 391FT 'wheel is larger diameter, thicker, and weighs about 50 pounds, whereas my 390 'wheels weigh about 25-28 pounds. My FT flywheel and clutch setup came from a '76 F700, and had a Clark 5spd behind it. What is yours from ? I think the starters noses need to be differant, even though the bolt pattern is the same, because the distance from the block face to the ring gear is differant. I mean front to back distance, not just the diameter of the wheel. DF
Hey Guys,
This is HUGGS!!! I tore my truck down and replaced the flywheel and bellhousing with parts from my 73(390 3 Speed) and seems to work somewhat better other than it (after it gets warmed up) it acts like it is out of time , with the woomp, woomp, woomp,
of the starter trying to turn the motor over!!! You sometimes have to wait 45 min. before it will turn even enough to crank !!!
I tryed to find a engraved mark on the harmonick balancer, but was unsusessful !!! got any ideas ????? KIM
