360 starter flywheel help!!!!

I'm helping a friend out with a body swap between his 77 2wd and a 76 4x4 and we wanted to use the 360 and np435 trans that was in the 4x4.

The 4x4 came from a impound lot and had a bad flywheel right off the bat and a chewed up starter. The new starter and flywheel aren't meshing correctly the starter seems to be touching on the outer edge of the teeth of the flywheel and are beginning to get chewed up after only 5 starts and beginning to look like the stuff I pulled out. Both starter and flywheel were matched to the other parts removed and came up by application in the parts store computer but something just isn't right can anybody got any ideas or part numbers of original parts for this?

Welcome to the forum!

Yeah, that part store puter has been wrong from time to time, and the PO isn't the first one to have this kind of problem. We have had a few threads about early and late flywheels having different tooth counts, try the search function.

I can't help with part #s, but here's a bump to the top.

Good luck, Mike

a quirk that ive seen is that sometimes an automatic starter gets installed in a manual transmission and vice versa , i know its hard to believe but its real common with som parts stores. it seems the bendix for each is a little different. sometimes its not the parts store but an inexperienced counter person

I seem to recall only one part number for the FE starter, it is the same auto or manual. Is it possible you have a large (390, 11 1/2") bellhousing and only a small (352,360, 11") flywheel? That would cause a problem with the tooth mesh. Try getting the bellhousing casting number and posting it here so someone can (hopefully) ID it.

Shims not an FE thing.
The nose of the starter may be an issue, but that problem is more QC related than anything IMHO.

I poked around, found these threads:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=353802

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=399824

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=171474

I guess I've been pretty lucky. Ford made my truck with a 360, some PO dropped in a 390. I had to replace the flywheel when I bought it. Wore out the 390, dropped in a 360 that was mated to an auto. Through all that mix-match the only time I had trouble with the starter grinding, the bell housing had loosened from the block. I think I've bought one new starter and used the one that came with the 360/auto.

Good luck, Mike

So what you need is a 360/390 11 inch , 184 tooth flywheel. Your supposed to be able to get those at Advance, but I was told I could only get the ring gear, probably because the guy working that day doesnt like me. So im looking for one too, but to use on my 429 instead.

Here is what the parts books say- one starter is listed for ALL FE engines, auto, manual, does not matter. Prior to 65 there is a different one listed, not an issue here.
There are two manual trans ring gears listed, one fits the typical FE with the 11" clutch, part number(Carquest) FRG-184T. There is another listed for an "M" code 390(??) that is number FRG-188T. The 184 and 188 relate to the number of teeth on the ring gear, so I think the 188 would have to have a larger diameter in order to keep the same tooth pitch. I do not know if those will both fit the same flywheel, I think they will since a flywheel was also listed and the same number fit both engine codes for the 390.

The starter shims listed for the FE do not affect how deep the tooth contact is, they are used if the nose of the starter has been machined in rebuilding enough to allow the cover of the starter drive to contact the face of the ring gear. Picture how the shim would move the starter and you will see what I mean.
