I mean, put the cobra motor in the truck, problem solved!
I've been told that a few times. If it was a half ton I probably would, but I also have a 98 Cobra that needs a motor for the turbo kit that came with it lol
Well I cant seem to catch any slack ever apparently. Go to try and leave for work today. Truck starts. Runs fine for a few, sputters, and dies. Crank no start. Fuel pump now continuously runs with the key on. Replaced the relay and that changed nothing. Checked grounds and they seem fine. Didnt smell any burnt wiring or anything. Does stop if the relay is pulled so I dont think its a short. I swear once I can rebuild this thing its getting an entirely new wiring harness. Stupid 80s wiring is the bane of my existence. Any thoughts where to go from here? I checked the other relay that was there too and it seems to be working fine I should add, whatever thats for.
Edit: Just tried to pull codes to see if it would give me any leads. It refuses to pull codes now I guess. Not sure if thats a sign the computer is having a stroke, I hope not but from what I've seen it might be.
Sounds like computer to me. If you’re handy with electronics, you can replace the capacitors if that’s the problem, usually is.
I'm gonna run a small handful of other tests, then pull it again. I dont imagine it looking any different from the last time but maybe it fried something, or finally completely gave out whereas last time it was only on its way, since it still dont run with the spout connected lmao.
Definitely not handy enough with them, I've mess with them a small handful of times in college here and there but no soldering or anything like that was involved
Edit: Tried some more things. Both fuel relay and ecm relay seem to be working fine. They have good strong clicks. Cant just swap them as they dont fit eachothers sockets though and I have no clue where or if there are any other relays on this truck that would function as a substitute. Pulled the computer out and gonna take it apart later when I can borrow some tiny sockets again. Whatever 4mm or something they are
Welp. Think that confirms it right there. When i first pulled it open the capacitor was melted to that resistor. Its only separated now cause I touched it to confirm what I saw. Thats unfortunate I guess. Dont really wanna buy a new one cause I was gonna eventually by a standalone probably after a rebuild. Used one I feel like just runs the risk of the same thing happening a little more than I'd like
Find a computer repair shop and see if they will replace the caps. Might be cheap enough or try to solder in a new one yourself! At least you know what you’re facing now. You could try to find a junk yard one, but it would be scarce probably. I haven’t found a 460 in my JY yet. Or… get the standalone now if you can swing it.

I definitely dont have the tools on hand to solder it myself, maybe back home possibly. Could see if there's any places nearby that could repair it though. I tend to agree, and finding one thats the same model number and all that too is a whole nother deal.
I would if I wasnt having to pay the machine shop bill for the Cobra motor lol. Been looking at the Pimpx system for quite some time, cheaper than the holley kits and less hassle it seems like.
A lot of guys like it. I use a DIYautotune megasquirt plug and play. It’s for a mustang, but I made it work pretty easily for the most part.
laptop/home computer repair shop is what I was referring to!
I have returned with a small update.
I've seen that its had some good reviews on site and on forums so I figured something like that would be the way to go
Took it to a place. They did try to fix it, however when the capcitor burned up it also burnt away the surrounding copper traces. They tried to fix it best they could but had low hopes for it to work, didnt even charge me cause of it. Tried it and it did start for about 5 seconds and then a puff of smoke came out of the computer and it died, so probably just need to get a replacement.
Their recommendation was to check the wiring for a shortage so now I have to figure out what wires connect to that capacitor in a 60 pin connector. Searching for the right diagram for that might be a nightmare.
Post 6 will help a lot! I would focus on the power wires and grounds first! I’m not sure of your funds status, but if it’s there, a new computer and a new engine harness. One company that I know of, Ron Francis, builds an entire engine harness. Especially with a custom computer, you could build the harness yourself if you trust yourself and go ahead and eliminate the sensors that wouldn’t be used anymore. That’s my plan one day…

I'll definitely keep that in mind for later if i get around to rebuilding it.
Just got around to checking the wires. Seems like everything is working as it should. Checked for resistance and voltage and i had those at everything that needed it. Now just finding a used computer for less than $200. The ones for the autos transmission trucks are cheaper somehow which is annoying. Seems my model number is also just one that isnt had. Oreillys may be the cheapest option surprisingly. Whether or not it'll actually work considering my recent luck with them who knows.

What is your computer c alibration? If you have a manual you can also use a C6 transmission computer as it has no electronics for the transmission and it also
You have a f250 or f350 with 7.5 and a eec-iv and manual trans and this is your part number for the computer: (this wasnt yours but its the same part number.)
we have a thread for finding updated calibrations/new computers, you should post in that thread to get help because there may be compatible computers that are cheaper
These 4 part numbers are A computer andThermostat combination OR a computer and a thermactor (secondarry air injection system?) for a 1988 trucks. 7.5 the c6 ones are only tossed in because they theoretically will work. but these kits might not be available. just realize this part of a tsb for:
ISSUE
Unsatisfactory engine performance or hard starting after a short hot soak in high ambient temperatures or while the truck is under heavy load may be caused by the strategy of the EEC IV processor. The processor strategy can cause spark retraction as the engine operating temperature rises. The rise in engine operating temperature on certain applications may be attributed to inadequate coolant flow caused by the thermostat. Thermactor silencers must be replaced on certain applications to prevent restricted thermactor dump air flow.
OP the above is from a TSB. if your DOOR JAMB has this sticker number on it , you should consider getting the new PCM and thermostat possibly: Calibration: 7-97A-R01, 7-97A-R10, 7-97B-R00, 7-98A-R00, 7-98A-R10, 8-97A-R02, 8-97A-R10, 8-98A-R02, 8-98A-R10, 9-98A-R00, 9-98B-R00
now if you DO NOT have one of those numbers, you can ignore it
