The instructions I've posted are directly from a 1998 Ford SUV manual. You might have to contact someone with a 1997 manual. If the directions I gave don't work then the 1997 must have a different program.
I'm sorry they didn't work for you. Have someone else try it. I had to have my son (computer gaming guru) do it the first time! I kept missing one of the steps.

Thank you for the information. I have new manuals on the way to me now so I will just have to wait until they get here. My friend called me last night in a panic because she locked her keys in her Explorer. I had her factory code for the keyless entry pad so I gave her the number and SURPRISE - the doors unlocked. I am beginning to believe that I just did something wrong so I will try it again when I am not so tired and stressed!
Hello,
For my 2001 F150 Super Crew I have two keys and one remote. I found one other remote that I had from the explorer I traded in ...oops. Can I program this Remote to the newer F150?
This seems to be a real popular question, especially for the "newbies," so let's get on with it.
If your Explorer is 2001 or older, first look for a sticker with a 5-digit number placed in any one of these areas: under the hood, inside a door or tailgate jamb, or inside the glove box. Ford used to provide the dealers with these stickers, and we were SUPPOSED to install them in the places I just mentioned. Nothing there? Now it gets a little harder.
The 5-digit code you need is attached to a module that sits on top of the left-rear wheel well. You access it by removing the cover in the cargo area for the jack/ washer fluid bottle. Using a flashlight and a mirror, look towards the front of your vehicle- you're looking for a light-colored box a little bigger than a pack of cigarettes. There's a sticker on the side of the box, facing the interior. It would really help if you had someone pull out on the plastic panel a little at this point. There will be several numbers on the module, but the 5-digit one you're looking for will be in large, bold-faced type. This is the PERMANENT code that works everything, and can be used to put in your own personal code. Now that you have the code, WRITE IT ON A STICKER AND PLACE IT INSIDE YOUR GLOVE BOX! That way, I don't have to type all this stuff again and again and again.......
so mark this procedure works with a 1997 model year explorer?
Hey on my 98 explorer the code was over the left rear tires insidt the compartment that contains the jack. the area is real tight so a little trick to retrieve your code is use silly puddy, worked great for me.
I have a 99 explorer sport. I used the information in previous posts to find and program my keypad entry system. I thank you all for this information. I bought this truck used from a dealer and it did not come with a fob. If I have the keypad entry system on there does it mean my truck is automatically fob capable and all i need to do is buy and program an fob? Or is it possible that the fob system is completely seperate from the keypad module? If that is so, where would I look to find out if my truck is equipped with the fob module?
I recently changed my battery on my 1995 Ford Explorer. Now the security system does not work at all. The keypad outside the driver's door does not lock. I tried to program the key fobs with no luck. I checked all of the fuses and they are all OK. Any ideas?
Question. I just bought a 98 explorer 4 door. It has power everything and cruise with the anti theft stuff. I was told it had remote entry but the fob was lost. bought a new fob and went throught the programming steps and nothing. I think they were wrong about the remote entry. Are these things pre-wired to accept the remote keyless module so that I can use the fob ?? I looked at the left rear storage area and only found a relay box and the electric lock switch. any place else to look to see if it is wired fo rthe box ??
Thanks !
In one of the posts here it looked as if the tech was using a trouble code reader that I might buy for $100 or so. Does anyone know of a codereader (other than the $3000 job) that will do this? I wouldn't mind having a code reader. Also, I am one of the lucky ones to buy used and only get one key, but in the glove box there is a card with a "key code", but it is "1185X". Does this "X" make any sense to anyone?
Thanks in advance, Danny
hello. i have been sifting through every last post to find places to look for this silly factory keypad code, and my truck has been torn to pieces in vain so far (not to mention my manicure.)
I see that the computer module seems to be the only "for sure" place where the code will be. And it is located on the rear drivers side wheel well in an explorer. Now, what about in a sport trac? please don't tell me i have to take the truck bed apart now!
Everybody around here wants to charge upwards of $86 to do this thing for me. I am broke but very patient. Your kind consideration is appreciated.
