FYI: I bought my Explorer new in 1997. The dealer gave me a plastic card with "XXXXX" on the card. It was the code of course. I just kept it in the owner's manual book thing.
I recently found and used my keyless entry on my 98 Explorer for the first time since owning it(less than 6 months)..Drivers door unlocked normally...relocked and unlocked a couple times all seemed to be normal..Went to a high school event about 30 minutes aftr and when I tried to open the drivers door from the inside it would not open or unlock..Has not worked since..Any info would be apprecialted
Are you saying that you were in the car when you tried to open the driver side door with the remote or you tried to open it from inside the building?
You may have been too far but if you were in the vehicle then I think if the key is in the on position on those models it won't work but don't quote me.
To reprogram your remote turn the key from off to on 5 times stopping at the on positions on the 5th time. The locks should cycle, hit the buttons on your remote and the locks should cycle again, take out key, locks should cycle once more,,,,,,,,that's it.
I was inside the vehicle and trying to open the door with the door handle..The drivers door will not unlock using either the remote or the unlock button on door panel
So how do you open the driver door, or are you doing it Dukes of Hazard style? lol (sorry had to throw that in there)
Is it just the driver door that does not open with the remote or the unlock button or all the doors?
If it's just the driver door then it's possible that one of the connecting rods in the locking mechanism could have gotten disconnected. As you close the door is there any rattling noise? Also when you use the remote or unlock button can you hear the power actuator cycling at all in the driver door? If not then the power actuator could be bad, the wire connector could have come loose or shorted.
On my 97 Expy when I pull on the inside handle the push button rod pops-up. I'm guessing that yours should be similar.
If none of the doors open with the remote or unlock button then it could be the fuse. My book shows the fuse is in the Power Distribution Box under the hood, Maxi fuse #10.
I tried to insert a picture of the door lock mechanism from my Haynes book but ended up wiping out my first reply draft. I'm not sure how to do it and also include all the text. I'll try to send the picture in another reply and see if that works.
Hope this helps.

Just the drivers door...Did the Dukes of Hazard for a day..LOL..Managed to get it unlocked with a coat hanger...Nothing is disconnected..and I can hear the accuator trying to unlock it..It's like it's childproofed or something...LOL..
Well then it's time to operate,,,,,you're gonna have to take the door cover off and see what's going on behind there. Could be something is binding in there somewhere. I think there's a couple of screws and the rest are those plastic anchors that hold the cover to the door. If you don't have one yet go get a Haynes manual for you ride.
I've got a 98 Moutaineer and I just looked up the master code on the module. Now, once I've put that code in, it unlocks the driver's side door. If I hit 3-4 it will unlock all doors. Except that's it - it won't do any of the other commands? It wouldn't allow me to put in my own code either. Any suggestions?
1. Erase any old codes by entering the factory code.(buttons will light up)
2. Press 1/2 button within 5 seconds.
3. Press 7/8 and 9/0 buttons at the same time within 5 seconds.
To set new code:
1. Enter factory code (numbers will light up)
2. Press 1/2 button within 5 seconds.
3. Enter personal 5 digit code(decide beforehand) within 5 seconds of each previous one.
To unlock all the doors, press the 3/4 button within 5 seconds of the driver door unlocking.
To lock all doors and set alarm system, press 7/8 and 9/0 at the same time.
To disarm or reset a triggered alarm, just enter personal or factory code.
Do not set a code with five of the same consecutive numbers. It's to easy for thieves to figure out.
Good Luck with it!Huffer
I have a 2001 Explorer Sport and looked high and low for the code and/or module. Ford hid the module with the code sticker on it above the passenger-side airbag. It took me about ten minutes to drop the airbag and find the module using instructions I found on another site. Here's the link because I know it can be frustrating not to be able to find the stupid code.
I have a 97 Explorer,I have the factory door code, but this is the problem, when the car is started, all the doors lock. Is there a way to disable this funtion? Thanks, and great info on this site
To deactivate the "autolock":
With all doors and tailgate closed but NOT locked, and ignition OFF.
1. Enter 5 digit code
2. While holding 7/8 button in, press and release the 3/4 button.
3. Release 7/8 button
The horn will chirp once if the "autolock" was deactivated
or two times if "autolock" was activated.
To reactivate the system, repeat steps 1 thru 3
Good luck
