AGATE,
Either code should work.I'd use my personal code just to keep in practice. Plan each move in advance so you can make it before the five second time limit for each action.
If you try to make a program change and you make a mistake, remember to wait at lease 30 seconds before you initiate another attempt.
If this doesn't work for you, there is another method of changing the "autolock".
To avoid any confusion, I'll save that for when all else fails!
Again I say,Good luck with it!......Huffer

Wink Here's how

It's located right behind the rear window (center) you have to remove the panel it should be there in big black numbers.
Hope this helps. In the newer models all the other stickers were intentionaly left off.

The computer module thats about the size of a cigarette box, where can I find that? Also it came with only one key and key chain remote alarm. I was told that you need 2 keys to make more keys(as many as eight can be made) by the Ford dealership. Well I went to a locksmith and he was able to make a second key and key chain remote alarm for a $130 dollars. Do I have to go to Ford now to get that 5-digit code? I know what Ford dealership the car was originally purchased from, can they help me out?
Appreciate any responses, thanks.

AGATE,
Are all the doors and tailgate glass closed?
Have the OFF.
Be sure anti-theft is inactive.(leave doors unlocked while doing all of this, that way your sure the anti-theft is off)
Each step must be done within five seconds of the previous one.
They must all be done within thirty seconds or you have to start over.
You must wait at least thirty seconds before trying again.
Reread the first instructions.
Are you holding the 7/8 button in while you press and release the 3/4 button?
does the horn chirp when you release the 7/8 button.
Keep trying and double checking if you are actually following the instructions.
Sometimes I read the instructions but then I still miss a step.

HUFFER, I did everything you said, and the system did cherp once,do you need to wait for a few seconds after you do this, before you see if it worked?

To AGATE,
Did you test it to see if it worked? The locks operate when you shift through reverse and release the foot brake.test it now and see.

Let's try something else.Something might not be right on your particular vehicle because if the horn chirped once then the procedure should be working.

Auto-lock can also be activated or inactivate by follwing this procedure:

Do steps [1] through [5] (below)within 30 second or you'll have to do it over.If you have to do it over, wait 30 seconds between attempts.
Close all doors securely.
1.Turn the ignition key to ON.

2.Press the power door UNLOCK control THREE times.

3.Turn the ignition key from ON to OFF.

4.Press the power door UNLOCK control THREE times.

5.Turn the ignition key back to ON.The doors should lock and unlock.

6.Press the power door UNLOCK control. The horn should chirp ONCE to confirm successful switching of the autolock system.

7.Turn the ignition switch to OFF.The horn should chirp to confirm procedure is complete.
AGAIN, GOOD LUCK!

AGATE,these procedures are the same for turning the system ON or OFF.
IE:If it's ON, it will turn it OFF.--If it's OFF,it will turn it ON.

If the '02 is like the '04, you can find the 5 digit code inside the c-pillar on the passenger side, just behind the back door. All that is needed is to remove one piece of trim and pull out the lower trim far enough to read the code off the box, (A flashlight is helpful). there are other numbers there as well, so dont put it back together until you try the numbers you found. Saved me $75 VS going to the dealer and hooking up to the computer.

To set new code:

1. Enter factory code (numbers will light up)
2. Press 1/2 button within 5 seconds.
3. Enter personal 5 digit code(decide beforehand) within 5 seconds of each previous one.
To unlock all the doors, press the 3/4 button within 5 seconds of the driver door unlocking.
To lock all doors and set alarm system, press 7/8 and 9/0 at the same time.
To disarm or reset a triggered alarm, just enter personal or factory code.

Do not set a code with five of the same consecutive numbers. It's to easy for thieves to figure out.
Good Luck with it!Huffer
Okay, maybe it is because I am blonde or I am missing something. I have tried these instructions and so has my friend who has a 97 Explorer (I have a 97 Mountaineer). We both can get the system to program a new number to lock the vehicle but we cannot get anything else.

After clearing all previous codes, I enter Factory Code and press the 1/2 button within 5 seconds. I then enter my new personal number. The system does not UNLOCK as stated in the instructions. If I press 7/8 & 9/0, the system will lock. I have then tried enter the second code and pressing 3/4 to unlock but nothing happens. How do you get to the point where it says that you press 3/4 after the driver's door unlocks? I cannot get the system to unlock any door at all.

Are all these instructions in the Operations Manual? Neither of us has these books but I found mine on eBay and I just waiting for them to arrive! I also got a phob from eBay and was able to program that with no issues since the seller sent the instructions to me on how to do it!

Any assistance will be helpful!

The instructions I've posted are directly from a 1998 Ford SUV manual. You might have to contact someone with a 1997 manual. If the directions I gave don't work then the 1997 must have a different program.
I'm sorry they didn't work for you. Have someone else try it. I had to have my son (computer gaming guru) do it the first time! I kept missing one of the steps.
