If the ball joints were bad, connecting the tie rod could have tweaked the knuckle just enough to cause a tight spot. No idea on the feasibility of such a thing but my brain thinks it's at least plausible. Of course I did just wake up from an unintentional nap so grain of salt and all that.

So would that classify as a Software issue or a Hardware issue? Pretty sure there's a pill for that either way.
