As I am waiting for a prescription to be filled, I browse. Something catches my eye. I double check the price to see if I can get it cheaper. This is why Walgreens is going out of business. Their prices are too high.
Before the days of big stores, Walgreens and Woolworths were in every community. Selling the same goods. Shoe polish. Socks. Toilet brush. Makeup. Greeting cards. Magazine aisle. Gold fish. Laundry detergent. Woolworths had lunch counters. Walgreens has a pharmacy.
Woolworths went out of business when Target and WalMart came on the scene. Walgreens is holding on because the pharmacy is a majority of their revenue stream. Big empty stores, bare shelves. Locked cases to prevent theft. And outrageous prices.
Here's what I saw today. The exact product, from the barcode scan, is double the price.
Make sure you have a concealed carry torch permit before you do.
Anyway, whether this guy is guilty or innocent, riding around on a bike carrying a torch was not his brightest move.
Even if the map guy is guilty, he goes through due process, innocent until proven guilty, I’m not defending a guy that openly carries a map gas cylinder on a bike through fire ridden neighborhoods, that’s why the first work typed was , Weird , as far as zip ties and duct tape , yep got those in the truck too , after each job , you’d be surprised what ends up in my pockets, screws , nuts , washers , pencils , zip ties , goldfish 😲, snickers , dammed if I find cash though , lots of lint and a few pennies,
I use to like going to Walgreens, I’d find the kids snacks were much cheaper, with out fighting crowds at Walmart , and finding a parking space close to the door was great , Walmart you’ll park in the north 40 , so I’m going to be lazy just like online shoppers and park where pickup is , those spots are right next to the handicap spaces , I’ve had employees say , you can’t park there did you order something, I’d say yes I’ll be right back .
I don't use the handicap parking much, mainly because the closest Walmart is so close I usually take the scooter. And trying to find an empty handicap parking space is an ordeal in itself. Especially on weekends. When I go to Winco, I park in the back 40 on purpose because I take the scooter in the bed of the truck, and it is no big deal to drive from the truck to the store entrance.

Walgreens had a good community store model, which lasted for decades. They were very much like the "five and dimes". Stores were big enough to carry variety & general merchandise, and moving enough merchandise to offer a discount. Anywhere you had a Walgreens, or a dime store, the smaller corner stores suffered. They just couldn't compete. They opened Walgreens stores everywhere, and beat up all of the corner stores and mom & pop stores selling general merchandise and variety.
After Walgreens, CVS copied the business model, and offered strong competition. Target stores then fired a shot into the battle, with smaller "community" stores, which oversaturated the marketplace. Now most of those Target small scale stores are gone, along with a lot of CVS and Walgreens. Kind of like the coffee wars where Starbucks wiped out a lot of small cafes, by opening stores everywhere. Then they eventually had to close a bunch of stores that weren't really making money. But it didn't matter. The mission was accomplished. They eliminated the competition.
Walgreens and CVS aren't done yet. They are still pharmacies. They fill a lot of prescriptions. There was a plan to integrate medical clinics. Some of the stores were remade into giant convenience stores with salads and sandwiches. I would like to see all of that square footage reimagined. Maybe the medical clinics, perhaps with an eyeglass and hearing aid vendor, and physical therapy. If they could put medical services under one roof, the stores could become medical clinics with good parking. And they don't have to manage every single service. Just sublease the space and collect the rent. But that would turn Walgreens into a real estate company.
I thought that a pharmacy would be the best place to get drug store items. Things like this are always right by the counter, because you need them when you're picking up meds. I am sticker shocked. Wal*Mart has the best price. Only I'm an hour away from the nearest Wal*Mart. No way am I traveling 40 to 50 miles each way to buy anything. There's a $6.99 shipping charge. You can only imagine how everyone is paying double, triple, and quadruple what items are worth. That's why I get upset with my local grocery stores when then print on the receipt that I saved hundreds of dollars and got 80% off? They are blatantly lying to us.
I just went to thrifty because they have the ice cream parlor , which was really big thing back in the day , you get a .10 cone , get your meds , and a six pack some snacks , but you only went for the .10 cent cone and walk out pushing a cart full of junk food , if you took the kids with you that was.30 cents and another bag of their junk foods 🤦🏻
looks like our weather might get sunny today , that’ll get me out and paint some steel brackets I had to make for a clients barn doors , I love to weld but it shows I’m a little rusty at stacking dimes , a lot of the problem is the rods and moisture,
have a great day gents .
I am surprised that Target is able to stay in business with all the Walmart stores around here. The closest Target is about two miles west of me. I pass it whenever I go to the VA hospital for an appointment. Yet I have only been inside it once in the 22 years I have lived here in Fresno. There are always cars in the parking lot, so I guess they are still making a profit.
Going to America's Tire today. Decided not to go yesterday after church because the weekends are always crowded at stores.
Target is a big box store. They are large enough to compete with Walmart. They're also operating pharmacy, eye exam, food, grocery, furniture, clothing, and such. These large stores are supposedly hurting small businesses. Small town general stores, hardware stores, butchers, fruit stands, and variety stores. Even major city neighborhood stores. Multigenerational mom and pop stores are being beat down. They lose their whole family's revenue source.
Then websales came along. Internet electronic commerce has sealed the fate of many mom and pops. I can tell you that I spend money online, and it's on purpose. I make the conscious decision to pay less than half of what someone else is charging. Nowhere in my stream of consciousness do I want to double or triple spend to save jobs.
It's always nice to see what people are making in there shops. Whats the barn door brackets look like?
hey Tim , 1/4” flat steel , I just rattle can sprayed them , nothing fancy because the cows will poop all over them anyway 😂, I’m looking to install in a few days , I’ll get some pictures during install .
