Held up great, no color change or visible fading.

I don’t have the Cerakote yet. I may try the paint and see how it does. Thanks for the tip!

I finally got some time to “play” on the old truck. I’m pushing forward to get it started. Before mounting the fuel lines/filters I wanted to clean and possibly paint the frame. I got the bed off and pressure washed the frame. I was surprised how little rust is actually on the frame. All the years of dirt and oily grime must have protected it somewhat. Here is a before.

Here is the frame after some superclean and the pressure washer. This is still wet in the pictures, but it looks surprisingly clean when dry. There is some crusty stuff that I will assume is road tar/paving. It wouldn’t come off with pressure. I’ll have to wire wheel it I think. Thanks for looking. Maybe I can get something done before Christmas 🤣

Awesome pictures! So, tell me about the fuel tank. It looks like the one I bought. (1970 mustang from tanks, inc.). I see you made a frame for it. It looks like you mounted it to the bottom of that frame. Or, is it just a fit up?. Where are you running your fill tube?
ok...edit.....I looked at the pictures again. It's mounted on top of the frame. Whew!! I couldn't figure out why it would be mounted to the bottom of the frame. I can see the light

Yes, the frame will be mounted to the top of the tank (Again correct in that it is a 70 mustang tank). Some people mount the frame on the bottom of the tank so that it isn’t seen from behind. I think painted black it will be harder to see. I want all the room I can have for plumbing and wiring on the top of the tank. I will clamp the tank to the frame and drill from the bottom through the track frame, tank, and tank frame. I will then weld nuts to the top of the tank frame to secure it (or use nylocks). I still need to weld nuts to the inside of the frame for the rear bumper brackets and possibly something else that escaping me right now. My bed is already rusty and rough so I don’t care to cut a hole in it and put the filler there.

I’m back at it again! I’m jokingly saying it’s my quarterly report! I pulled the truck out and got after the rear frame with a heavy wire wheel on my grinder.
I am running a rear gas tank and with it mounted, there will be no way to reach a wrench in for the bumper nuts. So to alleviate that, I’m welding nuts in for the bumper. I also welded a bolt through for a ground for the fuel pump and rear taillights.
I used a bolt to hold the nuts tight for welding. Also…….I didn’t know which holes were indeed specific for the bumper, google didn’t help. I welded an extra in for ****s and giggles.
Lastly, I needed to secure the tank frame to the rear frame. I marked the frame from the bottom and drilled holes for nuts and bolts to take care of that.
Now I’m ready for paint……..I just need some warmer weather!

Happy New Years to everyone!
I really wanted to spray the frame to match the front section I did earlier. It turned out great and I liked the sheen. Unfortunately it’s a lot of work to build a big booth and no one but me will see it under the bed.
I rolled the truck in, cleaned the chassis with wax and grease cleaner and mixed the paint with hardener. I used a roller and foam brush. Hindsight being 20/20, I should have used the foam rollers I bought instead of the 1/4” nap on the roller handle. It left a texture that I’m ok with, but wish wasn’t there.
I also set my seat in. I am wanting to get the wiring done inside. I need to see where the seat will be so I don’t set the computer or terminal strip where it’s not serviceable.

Hopefully this isn’t the last update for 3/4 months. It’s a little bit of a job to set up and tear down/clean up my “Paint Booth”. I try and get several projects lined up to get the best bang for my buck. I pulled the rear tank and frame. We scuffed them up and got them cleaned up with wax/grease remover. Then I heard the words I’ve been wanting to hear. “dad, can you show me how to paint?” How could I say No! We practiced a few times and he had at it. I will say he was hesitant and we worked through it at first. He did a great job.

Here’s my son’s first try at painting with a gun. Notice the two hand hold of the gun? He did great!

My son painted the top and I painted the bottom. After letting it cure over night (I heat the booth, it’s 20’s overnight) we put them together and installed it. Silly me got bolts too short. I am going to get some foam of some sort to put between the truck frame and tank to cut down on rattles. Look how smooth my son got the paint! I’m really proud of him!

Well, we had a small fail. Part of it is on me. I wanted to paint the upper intake. I hung it up and sprayed 2 coats of epoxy primer after scuffing it. My son wanted to try a “gloss” paint. We talked about setting up the gun for a metallic and spraying a light coat on our first coat since it’s a single stage paint. He got a little heavy. No worries. A little tape trick and the worst part was better. I ended up laying it flat and put 5 coats on with plenty of time for it to flash. I plan to try and scrape really finely with a razor and sand. If it doesn’t get it, I’ll paint it again with other parts later. Thanks for looking!

If you zoom in, you can see the runs at the front right of the intake. No worries!

Quick question, does anyone have a model # for shorter shock for the rear? I will be lowering it by flipping the front bracket, taking out the bottom helper spring, and a lowering shackle. I’d like to order them if anyone has any suggestions? Thanks!

Nice progress. In my plumbing career, we used a product that we called cushion strip. It was rubber about 1/8” thick by 1” wide, came in a roll and was cheap. We used it for isolating copper pipe from steel unistrut and clamps. Some type of rubber would most likely be better than foam for the gas tank.

I know exactly what you are describing. I’m an electrician and have seen that. Thank you!☺️

I took the front sheet metal off as a whole. I started breaking clip nuts and decided I’d tackle it later. It takes up way more room all bolted together. And I need the room back. So I brought it up from my cold storage little barn and started spraying everything down with penetrating oil. Some bolts came out and most just spun. I just systematically went to each one and started working them with a socket and wrench. I found some rust that I knew was there and need to come up with a plan.
Everything in a much smaller foot print. I will store the fenders, inner fenders, and front grill sections. The core support, I think I’m going to take it to the basement for the winter and see what I can come up with.

This is the bottom of the core support. I’m either going to attempt at repairing it or modify the repop version. I need to see how it goes together and how hard it will be to take apart.
