Got the message about 4 miles from the camper and needed to get back so I had to shut the truck down . Should I just go for a long drive next time out or?
I unfortunately do a lot of short trips where we are at.. so any suggestions on how to keep the filter clean would be appreciated.

Next time you see the message try to do a long drive. There is no telling when the message will come on so just driving and hoping it will reappear may be a waste.

Next time, when you get to your destination while in active regen, put your truck in park. This will automatically shut off the regen in 30 seconds to a minute later so the injectors on the passenger side, I believe, won't be under pressure dripping fuel which will make it past the rings into the oil. But with that said, let the truck idle some to get EGT1 down to 400 degrees, if the truck is hot, which is good for the turbo as the oil won't coke up inside the turbo. I have an iDash which I use to monitor active regens, EGTs, fuel pressure and other stuff.
If you do a lot of city driving, short trips and stop and go, the regens will come sooner than later as the soot load percentage will build up quicker with driving like that. But you can smell the soot burning off when in active regen plus, when you let off the throttle, the exhaust note while in regen is different. Any other questions, just ask.
If he's only got 4 miles into that regen when he parked the truck, it'll definitely go back into regen once he drives again. I've noticed on mine, pretty consistently, that when the DPF is at FULL, when you have the 3rd "ghost' screen activated, the dealer can do it if you don't want to get into doing it, that my truck will go active when the engine oil hits 145 degrees...
If you do a lot of trips, a digital monitoring device like the Banks iDash, is a helpful tool, especially since you do a lot of short trips.

The important thing to do in your senerio was to park your truck and let it idle for a minute or two while in "Park", which allows 1. The regen process to turn off 2. Allows the turbo to cool off a bit after the regen was forced to shut off. Short trips are ok for a while, but to get a good dpf filter cleaning is a highway run during a regen.
Thanks for all the info.
Is there a way to do a manual regen? That would be a nice feature to have.
I will definitely let it idle next time I absolutely have to shut it down, one would think after 6 years of ownership I would of asked this question before, most of the time the message comes up while driving.

The Banks iDash can trigger a manual regen when the vehicle is warmed up... I once posted the procedure and parameters...
I had an active regen this morning... It came early for some reason... Before I even had 300 miles since last one which burned down to 15%... Been awhile since I saw an active regen take the soot load down that far.
Truck went FULL, iDash went up to 147% then started dropping once EGT4 was hot enough. 5 miles later I was in the parking lot at work. Truck dropped to 90% and iDash was at about 68%. Put truck in park and let it idle to shut off the regen and allow EGT1 to come down to 400 degrees.
This is the screen I have set up for regens...
Just before I shut the truck off. EGT1 got down to 389 degrees. I usually like it to get to 350.
Does the IDash need any other adds to display those screens or does it just plug into the OBD port and is good to go?
not driving the truck until next week, all the things we want to do this weekend we can do by bus. Which is OK with me as parking is always tight on the weekends.

plug and play then use the buttons to display what you want

Okay so I have to correct my statement above that the truck will go back into regen after doing one for 4 miles... negative. My regen was only 5 miles long before I got to work and got hot enough to get the truck down to 90% when parked. After work, the SL% went down to 85%. It was still hot enough in the DPF to passively burn down to 85. So the truck stayed at 85% when I got home yesterday. I will give more details later...
And like Scott said, plug and play. Plug it into the OBD2 port and good to go.
