Transmission Issues

I've had rough shift when I go from park to reverse for a while and it happens 50% of the time but the transmission runs perfectly. Today for the first time, I put it in reverse and it didn't move. I went back to park then reverse again and it was rough shift but I reversed normally. Then I started driving the it shifted hard to 2nd but then no issues after that.

Could the shift linkage if off or possibly needs to fluid change? I checked the fluid and it doesn't seem too dirty. I'm not sure where to start. I drive it on long trips every other month and haven't had any issues.

Thank you. I'll take a look at it this week amd see if it fixes my issue. I should probably still change the transmission fluid as the previous owner did it at 30k miles and I now have 130k miles.

better to not drain the Torque Converter, just the pan, the OEM gasket is reusable.

I am going to do a full flush, connect a hose to the cooling line, and let it dump into a 5 gallon bucket until the hose shows clear air bubbles.

shut it down, add 6 qts, and keep adding fluid until the bucket is at 18-20 quarts.

Yes, you can drain the pan and the torque converter. You will get a quart or two less than doing the fluid exchange, but this will change most of it. The filter doesn't need to be changed for the life of the trans, but every other fluid change won't hurt to change it. The original gasket is reusable.

Don't listen to those that tell you not to drain the torque converter. That makes no sense at all.

How does one drain the torque converter? Is there a plug on it?

ummm,
I was just repeating what you posted in your article, sorry sir.
not that it makes any difference on my truck, it probably does not have a drain plug on the torque converter.

If it was built before August 2001, it has a drain plug. After that date, there was no drain plug.

As for draining the torque converter, if you're doing the procedure I wrote you don't need to do it. The fluid exchange will change the fluid. He asked about just draining the converter and pan and not doing the procedure. In that case, you should drain the converter.

Just to make sure... is your shifter lose? does it have play? Often the shift linkage bolts come lose under the dash along the steering column... make sure they're tight. The issue is most noticeable when shifting in reverse.
