I know I'm slightly misguided here, but the Econoline Forum is a dead animal so I figured I'd get better coverage here. I added a '65 E-100 Pickup to my collection and am looking for a 4 speed column shifter. They used them in '63 and 64. Want to add a 4 speed w/OD to my new ride and keep it on the column. I've been contemplating using the 3 speed for 1-4, them fabricating a 1 speed floor shifter for reverse, but that would make it a one man truck. Unless I came up with a way to lock out the 4 speed while it's in reverse.
First I want to see this E-100 pick up.
Is this a van with the top rear cut off to make a pick up?
Second I want to see some kind of proof that Ford had a 4 on the tree in 63 and 64 as I did not know they ever were done on USA cars or trucks.
If they used them in 63 & 64 what were they used on, car or truck or both?
I seen a French POS that had a 4 on the tree but that is the only one I had ever seen from anyone.
I tjink Number Dummy mentioned Ford having a 4 speed column on some cars. I think they may have been in the '50's. I always thought it would be a neat setup if you have the room for the linkages.

I would think finding any 4 speed column shifter parts will be next to impossible. I think your idea of using the 3 + rev for the four forward gears is the best solution. Maybe even use a cable to engage reverse instead of trying to route additional linkage.
Maybe a more detailed explanation of the tranny you expect to use would be helpful. I would assume, since you want to use the column shift the tranny would necessarily have external shift arms? Are you looking at a tranny where 4th gear is OD? How was reverse engaged on these rarities that had a 4 on the tree? Just trying to get a picture of exactly what you wish to mate together
Over only ever seen one 4 on the tree in my career, but I did see one. It was in a sixties Econoline.. it was at the upholstery shop next door to me so I didn't get to drive it or look underneath,
I thought I might find a Ford guy... I have a '66 F-250, a '65 Falcon and a '65 E-100 pickup, didn't think it was much of a stretch to find someone with knowledge of a 4 spd shifter here. And Fuzzy, it is a factory E-100 pickup, they made them from 1961 to 1967 it's pretty much a falcon with a pickup body on it. Has a 170 and a 3 on the tree right now, you could get them with the 144-170-200 or a 240 and in '63 and '64 you could get a 4 on the tree.. For some reason I can't upload a picture today but google it you'll find quite a few of them. I've actually had a few leads on the column shifter, but haven't found one yet.
PS. I found the 4 speed, went down to Jacksonville and picked it up with a rebuilt 170 out of a '63 falcon. So I just need the shifter.

Fuzzy, I had a customers years ago with a Mercedes that had a 4 on the tree. Until I bought this, I didn't know they existed.
