I have been working on the 302 engine in my 1976 F-100 and I got it running pretty good now. So when I take it out to hot rod it I have issues going from 2nd to 3rd because the column shifter is worn out. I'm thinking about going to a Hurst floor shifter. Am I stuck with a 3 speed or is there a economical way of going from a 3 speed to a 4 speed?
3 speeds and 4 speeds are both 1-1 final drive ratios. If you're going to a floor shift anyway, get a 5 speed out of a newer style truck and get overdrive. The ZF-5 is probably a bit much for an F100 with a smallblock, but one of those Mazda 5 speeds that they put in the F150's in the late 80's to early 90's would be great. Much nicer to drive on the interstate, and much easier on the fuel tank.

Thanks Jeff Watts for your reply but there will be no interstate driving with this truck, only back road joy riding. So I'm looking for the easiest, most cost effective conversion?
Except for the floorboard, yes. Oddly, I have one laying in the carport with an ad on craigslist to swap it for a case of beer. No takers yet.
Thanks, does the T-18 come with a long shifter in the middle of the floor board? If so is that interchangeable with a shorter quick throw type Hurst shifter?
Don't waste your time and money for the aftermarket (Hurst and others) conversion. They tangle as much as the 3 on the tree. The four speed will be helpful on the back roads having the granny. But none of the factory 70's truck transmissions are suited to "speed shifting" the recommended Mazda 5 speed is much more friendly for what you are talking about. As well as giving the shorter distance between gears both shifting and ratios as you would have 1-4 and OD vice 1-3 on the three speed or 2-4 on the T18.
Good Luck!!

Thank you garryk6, each post gives me a clearer picture of what I should or shouldn't do. I will have to investigate the difficulty level and financial cost of this conversion with me and my neighbor doing the job. He is a pretty good mechanic but I'm not sure he would be interested in taking on what seems like such a complicated conversion. Thanks for all the information.
"If you can find an old Top Loader 4 speed, that should go right in place of your 3-speed. "
It may bolt up, but is probably longer than his 3 speed, and depending on model, the shifter may be too far back. Those transmissions are very picked over, but can be had from an aftermarket outfit. $1000+.

T18 has the tall shifter on a tower in the middle of the floor. There is no external linkage like your 3 speed, and no short throw options are available.
A T19 would have closer ratios, but is no speed shifter.
Do you haul or tow with your truck? You could go with a T5, which would use your bell and clutch. You might have to fiddle with the shifter location depending on which one you find. OD is a bit tall, so your rear axle ratio becomes a question before you go that way.

Thanks again 85e150six4mtod for a very detailed and informative response. I do not haul or tow anything with this truck. It's my project vehicle and just a fun vehicle to get out on the back roads on the weekends and hot rod.
