Thanks for sharing! I thought I was pretty good with Google Maps, but that's a good tutorial. I'm not overly concerned about data usage, but cell coverage can be spotty here in TN. FYI I don't know what your cell plan allows, but Google maps doesn't really use much mobile data. Last month my phone says Google Maps used 0.16 Gb of data.
Yeah, not being a die-hard "techie," that video was helpful. Are you now navigating using Google Maps from your cell phone? 0.16Gb of data used in one month does not sound like much. Some of the articles I read about navigating-by-phone indicated it's typical to use amounts similar to that in one day. However, I do not know if it uses data all the time while driving or only when the navigation app is being used. If data is used only when the app is employed, then it may still be an option for me. In the meantime, I'm gonna' play with Android Auto and the "offline" map of southeast VA I've downloaded. And yes, I've also encountered spotty cell service in many places I've travelled, especially eastern TN, western VA, and large chunks of WV.

On second thought, I don't know if I can play with Android Auto at this time. I think I'd have to disconnect "Connected" service to do so, but would that prevent me from reconnecting during my trial period? My trial period doesn't expire until 12/29/21

AFAIK, you can run connected nav and android auto, no need to disable either.

No need to disable connected nav. I never really used it during my trial period, I used Google Maps the whole time because that's what I'm familiar with and like.
One issue I did run into was using voice commands for destinations. You need to say "Hey Google" before you issue a voice command to Google Maps, otherwise the voice command goes to connected nav by default. Kind of annoying, but no big deal after you get used to it.
I also used to think Google Maps used a lot of data, but my experience over several years is that it doesn't. To clarify my data usage, Google Maps used 0.16 Gb of mobile data and 0.44 Gb of Wi-Fi data in November. Android Auto used 0.01 Gb of mobile data and 20.09 Gb of Wi-Fi data. I'm not sure why Android Auto uses so much Wi-Fi, but it seems to use a lot every month. I do use Android Auto every time I drive, but I don't think it's using Wi-Fi while I drive because I never signed up for the Ford / AT&T hotspot.
If you're curious and want to try Google Maps, I'd suggest setting a mobile data alert on your phone so you don't accidentally rack up unwanted charges.

Found that to be true after playing with it a bit. First hurdle was getting past my hard-headed learning curve before realizing the phone must be physically connected to the truck via data cable. Once connected, I was pleased to see Android Auto would not find any locations outside the Google map I had downloaded to my phone. I'm starting to see the benefits of Android Auto.
they dont care lol I can understand shutting dynamic routing off, and live updates etc but taking the ability away to search is pretty low in my opinion! Ive been on the lookout for an APIM from a 21 F150 platinum but havent ran across one yet. my concern there will be do we have the GPS antenna? or not ? I dont think we do.
you want to know what is really low? They are still collecting data from you. you're the product.
Update: After reading online of others who plugged GPS units into their vehicle's USB port without success, I decided to not even try. They could get their vehicles to recharge the GPS unit, but there was no navigation communication fed to the vehicle.
Looked into Waze and Android Auto, but found they eat a lot of a phone's data. And being that I use prepaid services, I found using navigation apps could easily cost me well over $150/year. Not worth it for a service I'd used 2 or 3 times/months. Heck, I pay only $120/year for my cell service. Yeah, I'm cheap.
You're not cheap, you're smart. There's a difference.
I checked out magic earth in the App Store, it’s a offline download map navigation. Has good reviews just curious if it can be put on the truck screen through apple car play? Anybody try it?
until ford adds google maps or waze back to the APPlink youre gonna be stuck paying Ford to use navigation, or you need to get a platinum that seems like the only options. while I dont use Navigation in my truck often, I dont like having an option thats useless. I woulda absolutely been OK with ford taking away the dynamic routing, traffic, weather stuff but making my navigation useless(cant even put in a destination) is pretty low on their part. Charge me to update maps Id be ok with that too! Ford i know you dont care but Im not the only one frustrated with how you address the Navigation in your newest and latest and greatest system. Personally I would take sync 3 on a 12" screen over this garbage you gave us with sync 4.

Lariat package includes 3yrs connected nav in Canada. Not sure why the difference but it does. Lariat base package also includes all the options in the lariat Value package. Value package is not even an option in Canada. Here is my window sticker which shows 3yr included. BTW, I did NOT add the lariat ultimate package.

But, that says it is the built in connected navigation, that is what you get in platinum and limited in the U.S., and the three years are for the connected services that has the traffic and weather and updates, but the built in nav will keep working even after the 3 year period expires, it just won't be constantly updated.
So, Canada gets the better system in the base Lariat.
That for sure isn't fair, sorry *******s.

I don't disagree with you about fairness. It really doesn't make much sense. I suspect it has to do with government regulations. There are many other areas where those south of the border benefit. Cellular plans for one. A basic plan with 15gb or data costs 80$CAD plus the cost of the phone. So for an iPhone 13 Pro Max you are looking at $120CAD plus taxes and other fees. All said and done $140/mth CAD. That is unfair when down there you can get plans for around $35.00 plus device for unlimited data. Just saying. Different Countries, different rules.

It all depends on whether the author of the app has done the development to get approved for Android Auto or Apple Car Play or not. That's not as easy as you would think, because apps have to function in a manner deemed safe to use while driving by the powers to be at AA and ACP or they won't connect. For those of us that pull RVs, ToGo and RV Trip Wizard have GPS apps that can be specifically tailored to our own RV size and weight, but neither one is compatible with AA or ACP yet.
To answer your question, read up on the app and/or contact the app's author and ask them.
