I have a 1991 F150 XLT Lariat 4WD and need to replace some u-joints on it. The main concern is the U-joint connecting the transfercase rear-output to the driveshaft at the slip-yoke. The problem is a very noticable clunk and rock in the truck when going from a forward gear to reverse or going from park to reverse or a forward gear. The joint is most likely original and has 72k miles on it. I can replace it myself with a vice and hammer, but can someone help me with the sizes?
i dont have a caliper and for some reason no autozone, o'rilley, or advance auto parts can find the proper size. is it the same size as the joint from the driveshaft to rear pinion yoke?
Can you bring the U-joint in to the auto parts store? They ought to have a caliper.
The experience I had with my '95 F-150 would lead me to never go with a size that I was told over the internet was right. One of the U-joints on one of the driveshafts (I think it was the front shaft, but it was a long time ago) had two different diameter caps. Nothing said it was supposed to be that way, but apparently that's what Ford had available that day. Checking it with a caliper told the tale and I was able to get the correct replacement.
My rear driveshaft uses standard 1330 joints at both locations. I used Spicer 5-1330X, these are 1.063" diameter caps with 3.625" width.
Yes, the front shaft uses the goofy joints: 1.125" diameter caps on the shaft, 1.063" diameter caps for the pinion & t-case yokes. 3.625" width on those. I've heard them called 1330BC joints, where BC stands for big cap. For the Fords, use Spicer 5-7438X.
Edited to add: 1996 F-150 4x4, supercab short box, E4OD with BW 13-56 t-case.
