noises from the driveshaft?
Just bought a 1995 Ford F-150, automatic, with 4x4... Had it inspected by a mechanic, said something about the driveshaft, was wondering if this is what he meant?
I didn't notice it then (and how I didn't I'll never know...), but when you apply the accelerator, at a slow speed, you hear this "popping" sound, a low dull pop from the back of the truck, sometimes when you let go of the accelerator you hear it again...
Also, when you first shift into reverse, I've noticed that you have to wait for the truck to almost "roll" into the gear... It only takes a second, but if you shift right into reverse and try and drive off, it acts like its in neutral... I just keep my foot on the brake until I hear it engage into gear...
When it does engage into reverse, I can hear this, not a squeaking noise, but a sound indicating friction, when you apply the gas... Only happens in reverse...
Not quite sure if this is a driveshaft problem, or a transmission problem... Is it worth fixing? Will it get worse? How much will it cost?
Thanks for your insight, I'm still new at this, haha.
With the driveshaft out. Check for binding in all u-joints. Also see what kind of play is in the rear end. urn the yoke coming out from the front of the differential side to side. You shouldn't have alot of play there.
