You did not mention GM, but I will give my thoughts. Have been in GM trucks for 30 years, currently in a DuraMax which has been a great powertrain. I have decided to go back to gas for our new truck and Ford has the best gas powertrain available at this time (IMO). Ford has hit a homerun with gas/10 speeds. GM missed the boat rolling out a new engine with a 6 speed tranny.
Drove the Ram 8 speed also it is a nice truck. Not as nice as Ford, but it was nice.
I think Ford really has it nailed right now.
Should pick up new F350 Lariat this week.
Man I hate threads like this. Do your research, I bet you already know more than the sales person that is going to walk you through the truck before you test drive it. Then do a decent test drive with or without the sales guy. 50 miles at minimum. Drive it, park it, reverse it, cruise it, backroad it, u-turn it, cycle the 4WD, up/down windows & moon roof, etc. Then get the one YOU want. Otherwise you will always say, “Man I wish I would have gone with my gut.” I have a 17 6.7L CCSRW 4WD and my Dad does too but my father in-law has a very nice longhorn ed. Dodge DRW Cummins and it is equally very nice. Get the one you want. Then be happy.
Just remember that a "Ram" is still a Dodge. [...]
Definitely not. Corporate culture matters. Parent company ownership matters. It’s been over a decade since the split. It’s not just a badge and it’s not just ornamental. The split was made so that the companies could diverge without affecting one another. It’s a different company with a different culture. For good or for bad, I don’t know. But there is no Dodge truck anymore.
Until Ford came out with the aluminum body I was going to buy a Dodge for my next truck. Then 2017 happened and I changed my mind. Didn't even research the Dodge. I wanted the aluminuim body to get away from the red rust. That is the main reason my 2002 F250 was time to get ride of. Time will tell how the body holds out. We have lots of salt on our roads...... Oh I almost forgot to mention I didn't consider GM at all due to how many times our Duramax's at work go into limp mode. In comparison our work 2017 F350 6.7 has had zero issues....
A guy I know had a 2016 Ram 3500 DRW... needed a full suspension rebuild at 42k miles, the DEF system had to be replaced at 25k.
Sure, not all Rams have those problems, and not all Fords are trouble free. But I have heard of more than a few Ram owners needing rebuilt front ends with low miles. That's ridiculous!
I drove a 2019 or 2020 Dodge Ram rental for nearly two months. Interior was cheap looking and feeling. The drivers POV seemed recessed. Like I was sunken down into the truck and couldnt see out. The loads I hauled were great. Plenty of power and no turbo lag. However I would never buy one. Quality and longevity are very low ranking. The radio/operations center is garbage by the way too. If it were a lot cheaper, perhaps, but it is not a lot cheaper at all.
My 2008 Chev LB SRW was great on power but the sheet metal was paper thin and everything conceivably broke on it. Front suspension was shot early, and everything on the interior was broken quickly. NOW days the quality is even worse. After 20 years of driving Chevys, Im done with them at least until they decide to start making good Suburbans again that dont cost a million dollars
My last THREE Super Duties have been great overall and whips the competition hands down. Better in every way. They're not perfect, death wobble, some engine parts are cheap, but there's nothing else American or otherwise that would be an option
OK everyone, I have read a lot and asked a few questions, now I am getting close to handing my hard earned $ to a car dealer (well, when the dealers open their doors up again that is). I like both the F350 (likely King Ranch but possibly Limited) and the Ram Limited. My truck will be a long bed, crew cab, SRW. There are things that I favor about each making my decision difficult. Please tell me why I should choose the Ford (or the Ram if that is how you feel). Bias in your answers is fine, but please thoughtful comments only. "The other brand sucks" type comments are of no help. They are both nice trucks, I simply want to know why you chose Ford. Also if there are any "I couldn't live without it" options that you want to mention, tell me about them! Thank you for helping me make my decision.
I was going to buy a Ram until I saw their rear bench seat. The middle seat is garbage and my kids will have to sit on it for long road trips for the next 4-5 years. I wanted the 8' bed so MegaCab wasn't an option.
I prefer GMC. I miss my duramaxes and the IFS. The solid front axle is annoying when turning in 4wd and trying to pull a trailer in the field. Front tire wear is also poor on the Ford.
I have had all brands and use my trucks to their full capacity. I put 50-60k miles per year and keep my trucks till they have about 300k on them.
I went Ford this time because of price, aluminum body and the F-450 package. I felt the front end of F-450 was built heavier and wouldn't wear out as quick. That isn't a consideration for you though. The Ram and Ford were about the same money. GM was way more when I bought my 2019 and their specs were lacking, that has changed now though. If you live in a salt area like me I am hoping the aluminum body helps rusting issues. My Ram was rusting through the paint on the fenders in 3 years. The wiring also had multiple rotted out spots and needed replaced after two years in the rear marker lights and license plate lamps.
If you get 6 passenger seating be aware there is no A/C vents in the back seat. We have to drive with the windows down a bit when it is hot out or it gets too hot in the back seat for the kids. I owned the truck for almost 6 months before I realized this. The kids are literally sweating when we are comfortable in the front. Major oversight on Ford's part on a $100k truck. For the most part the truck works good and I am happy with my purchase. Tire wear on the front outside edges is a bit excessive.
My recent trucks in order all 4x4 diesels: 2016 ram 3500 srw crew shortbox Laramie, 17-18-19 f350 srw crew long box lariat, 2017 ram 3500 srw crew shortbox Laramie. 2020 f350 on order.
fords: better power, nicer fit finish, quieter, Ford rides way better Ram is a tank in winter and rough roads, seem to tow nicer but comparing short to long wheel bases, large fuel tank is nice, sync system seems better than the ram phone interface. Ps... larger def tank nice.
rams: better stereo, nicer seats for my size 6’1” 220lbs, Cummins motor is addictive rumbles along some times 1100-1200 rpm and is happy, small def tank stinks, slightly better mpg but not a lot, airbag suspension nice always comes back to level (my favorite option as I haul/tow lots), much better engine brake.
personally I prefer the Fords but the ram still a nice truck and the 400hp, 1000lb likely closes the gap both my rams are 350/800 I think. I’m sure there more but that’s my high points.

Reason: Sp
And the Dodge guys always have them stuck way out.
That way they have as much HP as Ford!!!!
Reality, on my RAM dually, I don’t like the rear visibility with the moose ears down.
Ford definitely has better mirrors. And with dually’s I like fords fender profile better.
Ive been a GM guy for a while, last 3 vehicles being GM trucks. I hated the IFS on my Duramax, even after multiple alignments from several shops it still completely ate up front tires, even with following a regular rotation schedule. The IFS also falls apart pretty quick, had to do a full front end rebuild after 80k miles.
I went with ford just for overall aesthetics. Just love the looks. The solid front axle, finally a HD front end on a HD truck! Aluminum body, living in the salt belt im hoping the body holds up a bit better (still doing a once a year undercoating regiment of WoolWax to protect all the steel under the body). The 6.7 is an excellent engine. FIL is a master ford ASE tech for over 40 years, and he rarely has issues with the 6.7. Only the first year 6.7 had issues with turbos. Comfort and creature comforts. I went with a platinum, and it could have anything i could possibly want and more! I love the seats/seating position as well. Easy to see everything around you.
After being in a ford for the last 8 months, i can honestly say im in LOVE with my truck. Never thought id say that about Ford, after being a GM fanboy for so many years HAHA.
