I havnt dug into yet, but last night, wanting to leave the parking lot, starter wouldnt turn over. I have a led light that lets me know that power is exiting the starter relay, to the starter. She lit up. So, im thinking, gots to be the starter. Its oem with 306xxx on the clock. I have a new DB at home but, i aint home lol...She finally did turn over and truck fired up but that was after i beat the sumbiatch into submission....
Could it be the ignition even though the starter relay led lit up?
Same as Mark... on my Sable the starter gave way, but when I had it towed under my roadside assistance policy they towed it to the Ford dealer about 45 minutes from the house. Ford told me $450, yes $450 to replace the starter on a 2002 Mercury Sable that wasn't even worth $450...
I had my wife drive me up there, got under the car with a 3 lbs steel hammer and beat the hell out of that thing while my wife kept the ignition on start. On the third big *** whack of the hammer the starter realized it was going to have to give in and started the car.
Again, 99% chance it is the starter failing. You could reach up over the starter and see if the connections are still mounted solid in place just for peace of mind though.
I too have used the hammer both on starters and in-tank fuel pumps. This only is a solution to get you home or to a shop. The armatures in worn fuel pumps will get whopper-jawed due to worn bushings on the ends. The hammer helps jar the armature enough to allow it to work.
On starters the contact surface of the solenoid becomes so pitted it doesn’t make solid contact. The hammer helps with that also.
i agree with Skyski regarding those DB units - been there, done that, but never again. Got me a true Denso starter.
In my experience, if tapping on the starter makes it work, the starter is on its way out.
Based on my recent experience, I x2 Mark's comment. Just went through the whole starter replacement routine. My starter was also receiving power just fine. Initially, a couple of good taps on the starter woke it up enough to work. (I was underneath with the hammer and somebody else was turning the key). After a few days, not even that would help. Absolutely was the (original) 18 y.o. starter. I still can't believe how well it cranks over now that a rebuilt starter is in place.
Concluding(hopefully)..truck been parked since last week. Came home and traded it for the 02. Now that im back home for good, starter getn switched out today..shiaty part is, the way i parked it(to unload bed) p/s is on my gravel side of driveway lol..so, my buddy gunna tow mw me down street to pop the clutch so i can turn ur around to fix it
