Never experienced this prob. before... Every once in a while ( maybe every 20-30 starts) it starts up fine, but when I release the key from start to run, the starter keeps turning (engine running). I then turn the key off (engine shuts off) but the starter keeps on turning. The only way to stop it is disconnecting the batt. Reconnecting the batt. just re-energizes the starter, until whatever is "sticking" decides to return to normal, then I can re-connect the batt. w/no starter engagement.
Parts replaced so far: Starter and solenoid/relay. My guess is that the lock cylinder or ign. switch is going bad? Any ideas?
I would say your starter solenoid is sticking.
The contactors inside can arc up and weld together therefore keeps on starting.
That's a cheap part, less than 10 bucks, I think I havent bought one for a long time.
If not that it might just be the ing. switch, doubt it though.
You state that when you shut the engine off the starter keeps engaging.
This must mean the starter is NOT engaging the flexplate but just turning without starter drive being engaged?
You never mentioned any rattling from the starter when the engine was running which is what you would hear if the starter drive was engaged.
Is this correct ?
Usually when there is power going through to the starter Solenoid S terminal there is major power going to the starter therefore engaging the starter drive.
I had this very same problem, I got the starter replaced by the dealer as well as the solenoid.....a year and a half later, the starter started sticking once more....we replaced the solenoid and fixed the problem for a bit...
then I got stranded once more with the same problem....
it turns out that the supposed new starter was creating a load on the solenoid and starter relay under the dash and the contact points were melting shorting the circuit therefore leaving it open and cranking away...
The fix, new relay, new solenoid and a revised high torque starter
cost $450 of cumulative visits to the service center.
The starter keeps turning the engine when the key is in the "off" position. Also, it doesn't rattle or make any other strange noises while driving. Once this "condition" goes away, everything is normal.
Could you tell me where to find the start relay under the dash? I assume that it's not in the fuse box?
If the starter engages AFTER you shut off the engine, it has to be a problem in the ignition switch, which is mounted to the side of the steering column above the brake pedal. You can find diagrams and a procedure here.
I've had this problem on two other vehicles, a Suburban and an Isuzu truck. The problem was a stuck Bendix arm; a gentle tap or two with a hammer on the starter freed the arm. A new starter fixed the problem on both of these vehicles, although your mileage may differ. The problem continued on the Isuzu even after the key was turned off, as it does in your case.
