SO I have a few boxes of ammo-- few hundred pounds of frozen meat- and other food to last my little family quite awhile- (Sept maybe) A serious flaw in my preparedness plan is clean water-- I am thinking of making a water filter out of sand and charcoal-- my issues so far in previous attempts is that it tastes nasty. It tastes like sewer water filtered through charcoal. (and it wasn't sewer water going in) I can't imagine lake/pond water being much better. Boiling it doesn't really help. Any real thoughts?
As I have mentioned for years on this page- electricity - will be the downfall of society-- if it gets to the point where we loose electricity- 1/2 the people will die with in the first year. Some due to illness (bad food-- no meds) Allot of people will die from those who do not value the human life as much as I do.
Has anyone really really thought about how bad this virus thing CAN get? I have been corresponding with a few friends in Italy and how bad its gotten there- I have seen people fighting literally blow for blow over toilet paper-- Not food-- Not medicine- but toilet paper-- and it hasn't even gotten remotely bad "yet". I feel I am slipping into a dark place- each little enjoyment I have in life is being stripped away a little at a time. Friends plans- gone- Travel- gone-- Wheeling -- gone-- I am going to try a little fishing to clear my head next week. WHo knows might catch a little food and add to my stock piles.
At what point does one decide to step away from society- and put a plan into action? Can one truly survive in this day and age away from humanity?
I am thinking about your water filter you created. My guess is you probably don't want to drink the first say 100+ gallons that you run through it. Perhaps the first gallon you run through it, you run a tablespoon of clorox to kill the bacteria trapped in the sand, (maybe more, maybe less) Once you have run enough water through it, it in theory, should flush out some of that taste and smell. Perhaps?
I feel we are still a long ways from the Zombie Apocalypse you described above. Meetings with friends can still happen, Its just not recommended that you get more than 50 of them together at a time. Also Like your fishing trip, lots of things like that can still happen, but maybe just not at a state park, or COE park. May have to ask a farmer if you can fish on his land, near a creek or river.
I have already decided, that if we run out of meat, I am not above going down to the creek behind our house and bringing back a deer, even if I have to lead Bambi back with a promise of ice cream and beer.
I do believe this will all get worse before its better. I hope that all of us, come out of the other side of this with a new appreciation for things, and a new outlook on life, making the best of all situations. We are just starting to feel the pinch, but we will survive. It wasn't all that long ago that American Indians didn't have electricity and LOL!!!! I almost said TP... HAHAHAHAHA!!!
OOh I know we are a long ways away from zombie type apocalypse--- but are we that far from roving gangs-- People stealing what others have? There were reports in italy of people banding together and just going and taking what they wanted-- Much like the looters in years past. They started doing that kind of thing in China- but the military went in and killed them-- thus ending the conflict. It just makes one think.-- I wish I had moved on with the plan of a small acreage some chickens and what not-- I would feel better about the future.
I live on the lake and suppose I can at least get protein from catfish, drum and carp. Also, water is just a couple of hundred yards away. It would have to be boiled and filtered. Just like the Hank Williams II song a country boy will survive.
The Washington folks can't pass something simple but have to try to load it up to benefit their friends who paid the way for them to get elected. Us regular folks will get the scraps as usual. That or they attach a bunch of unrelated stuff for a particular constituency.
