'56 f100 build thread
Engine is assembled and mounted with the trans in the frame. Biggest pain was fabricating a “hoop” to modify the trans xmember to clear the brake booster.
I used a CVF front accessory serpentine kit.
We put the chain hoist to good work. It’s really easy to work with compared to the picker if you can get the vehicle sitting parallel to the I beam.
- I built the exhaust system using a box of 2.5” tubes with various bends that summit racing sells and added a set of flow masters. This project was an absolute bear that took a few weekends and really tested my patience.
- parking brake is installed
- gennie shifter is installed on top of trans. Had to build a cover as it sticks up through the floor a bit above the AOD.
- classic auto air conditioning kit is about halfway installed. I’ll make a post about it when I’m done.
- I sold the Mach 1 mustang seats to a guy that is doing a mega restoration on a 428 car. I was going to use a 91 f150 bench but it doesn’t work with the shifter and is a bit too wide for my taste. So I ordered a set of buckets from CJ pony parts. Will show those after they arrive.
- engine bay and front clip are coming together. Just waiting on power steering lines, some fittings for my trans cooler, and a TV cable adapter for my carb.
This setup was back and forth under the truck several times but I found it much easier to weld it up on the table.
Had a visitor while installing the shifter.
Serpentine setup all buttoned up.
Built a little house for the top of the shifter.
Duals coming out under the bed. I had to run them under the axle due to the 4-link.
Finished tunnel for trans and shifter.
Engine is mostly ready to fire just need a few final items.
I forgot how much of a bear it is to get the front sheet metal installed and lined up.

Don’t forget to remove the screwdriver from the left fender before slamming the hood.
Best regards, Mark
Overall the system is nice and the guys at classic auto air have been helpful with questions. There are a couple of items that didn’t come as expected for the ‘perfect’ fit kit for my truck but I was able to work around.
Fitment of the engine bay components were mostly good. The instructions were too brief on how to install the condenser. The brackets were partially drilled. I believe it was just a production/packing error as the brackets were not finished or specific to the truck.
I didn’t like the plastic control and center vent housing so I used a bracket from mid fifty for controls and made a vent bracket for an aftermarket vent I bought. Other two vents are at the sides. The AC ‘on’ control is in the dash in place of the choke ****. The vent tubing for the defrost is 2” and the defrost ducts on my truck are 2.5” so I had to use bigger tube and adapt. I’m not positive my defrost ducts are stock to a ‘56 so that may be my issue but I wanted to note it.
This is a view of what is visible of the unit on the passenger side.
The glove box area is pretty much entirely taken up by the system. The mini box included with the kit was a few inches too narrow for my glove box opening so im skipping it and using my center console for that purpose.
View of compressor and lines and figment with engine accessories kit.
Hose routing at firewall.
Condenser location in front of radiator. It had to be offset for fitting clearance.
