I would love to have a generator, but it is not financially feasible at the moment. However, so far, except for a bunch of kids playing with the outside breaker switch, our power has not gone off.

Power actually stayed on all day yesterday, and it would appear that we are past the "big wind" events for the time being. I kind of get the feeling that this is the new normal for the time being. We are 100+ miles from the area where the fires were, and the only local power problems have been caused by PG&E turning things off and on. There is an area north of us with power out after the restoration, and it would appear that the issue is a blown transformer that occured when they switched the power back on.

Our old generator was the deal of the century. It's a 10KW unit, so somewhat hefty. I don't remember the original price on it; probably somewhere around $3500-$4000, but we got it for $1500. This was over 15 years ago, so that's a factor. None-the-less, I feel it doesn't owe us a dime at this point.

I keep thinking that too. About 5 years ago, I thought that the cost for solar had about bottomed out, and yet the costs keep going down. I thought it was a big deal that I could get panels for under $1 per watt, but then they went to 75 cents/watt. Yesterday I saw an article about 6 cents per watt. It has actually gotten to the point where the solar panels are almost incidental to the cost of a solar system. There is more cost here in getting the damn permits. What's wrong with this picture?

Of course. Permits for everything. Can't even put solar panels on your house without a permit. What a joke.

I was thinking along the lines of a portable, trailer mounted unit. Wal*Mart has them in the parking lot, for powering their surveillance cameras. I think that you could hook them up to your truck, drive them home, and nobody would know because you have also stolen the camera.

Except everyone in the parking lot who watched you hook it up and take it. LOL

Jim,

You should do it at night. No witnesses.
