Not much of an indigenous cultural presence in The Bay Area. Penny slots don't count. I wish there were some sort of venue where you could experience native food, drink, dance, history, et cetera. If there is, I haven't been there. Not even the Indian casinos have a room where native culture is offered.
I've not had my DNA checked, but I have reason to believe that I may have some indigenous DNA in my system. It is probably more than Elizabeth Warren's, but I don't really have a clue. When my Dad was in WWII, and was stationed for a time in Trinidad, the guys in his unit thought he looked like one of the natives (he had a very dark complexion).
Very popular these days to test DNA. I know it's controversial, but I will say it. Pocahontas is a scammer. She's about as Native as Rachel Dolezal is black. For those who don't know, a white girl changes her name to Nkechi Amare Diallo, claims to be transracial, and expects to be recognized as African American.
Pocahontas is a scammer? She was born to a native family. She converted to Christianity and changed her name to Rebecca. How does that make her a scammer?

Not Pocahontas, Pocahontas, aka the real one, but Elizabeth Warren, Pocahontas. The one who was sarcastically renamed because of her idiotic identification and assertion that she was in fact, part American Indian.

I'm half Japanese. Mom was from Japan and Pop was from Pennsylvania and I made the same exclamation back when she kept pushing back against the snickers, standing her ground while she kept claiming she was in fact, American Indian.
My Mom was 100% Lithuanian. Both her parents emigrated from Lithuania. Their last name has always been somewhat of a mystery, as I could not decipher their handwriting on the documents we have.
My Dad was allegedly mostly German descent. I say allegedly, as I have a darker-than-normal complexion (not as dark as my Dad, but still), and I have some odd bone growths in my mouth called "tori". My dentist and oral surgeon have explained that tori are common in native Americans, and some asians. Someday I will get my DNA analyzed. My SO did it a couple of years ago and has discovered some long-lost relatives that she was unaware of.
Okay, I get it now. I thought you were talking about the16th century one. I don't watch/read the news much, but it does sound like a scammer to me. My mom's dad was 100% Cherokee, but he married a white woman, and my mom didn't have dark skin , nor did any of her siblings. My brother and I are about as white as can be. Nobody would believe us if we claimed to be Cherokee despite our grand father being one. I have been told both my brother and I have 25% Cherokee in us, but we have not checked on that. And don't have any signs of it, like the dark straight hair, or darker skin. Go figure. However, you could tell just by looking at him that grand father was Native American.
Fake New. Half truths, and soundbites. That's how we are divided. That's exactly how the media selectively reports only what they want to brainwash us with.
At the end of the day, we're all just Californians. Not that it matters; being from San Francisco, I'm just a poor Chinese boy. Not that it matters, being from San Francisco, I order food in English, by the numbers on the menu, or I point at the pictures - just like everybody else ordering Chinese food. "I want number 14, number 65, and number 31. Extra spicy. No MSG."
Interesting how we are such a diverse collective.
And I think that you need more than just a blood test. You actually have to have an established tribe acknowledge you as one of their own. Which was the problem with Elizabeth Warren. The Indian Nation actually stated that she was not a member, has no traceable lineage, and they rejected her claims. Then after a lifetime of lying, she finally agreed to take a blood test, which showed that she was a liar. No politics. I just don't like that she lied about being Native, to take advantage of special minority status. Let's say she lied about it on a college application; she stole a place in that college which should have gone to real Native.
