Some kind of module, like the Pertronix Ignitor for example. It is a drop in replacement for the points & condenser. Part #1281 iirc. (Ford used the same points from '57 to '74 or somesuch, at least in V8, so that's what Pertronix offers for pretty much everything Ford.) You can use the existing ignition coil and the rest of it if you want. 20 years in my Y-block, never missed a beat.
I gave up fighting the old worn 292 distributor. For not much cost I went with a full new small cap HEI distributor, coil and 8mm wire set. Been very happy with it and have used it on two other Y blocks so far with no complaints. Click Here
X2, on the pertronix 1281, got tired messing with points, condensers and installed the 1281 back in the early 90s. I’ve never had a problem and it was a simple installation.
