I bought a distributor of craigslist and I'm confused. It said it was a stock distributor with a petronix kit in its which made it electronic, and the guy said it had a magnetic pick up,what does that mean?
Pertronix is a conversion kit used to convert a point style distributor to electronic. This eliminates the points which require regular maintenance and routine replacement.
The magnetic pickup is the trigger used to fire the coil. It takes the place of the distributor cam in a points style distributor.

So is this distributor going to be maintenance free? How do they work? I paid $125 for the distributor,a flame thrower coil, and a high pressure oil pump, how'd I do as far as a good deal?

Yes, that's one of the main reasons for going to electronic, it's virtually maintenance free.
They use a magnetic pulse to trigger the coil to fire. Some use infrared others use hall effect, it depends on the design. New distributorless ignitions use crank position sensors to tell the computer when to fire the ignition.
If it's all new that was a pretty good deal.
