Ive just learned that I have the distributor from a '71 240 cid truck or van. Im upgrading to an electronic ignition and need to get this straight. According to Number Dummy this is what I have: Marked: D1TF-12127-CA = Ford part number: D1TZ-12127-C (Motorcraft DA-1106).
Original applications: 1971 F100 & E100/200 240 I-6 w/a C4 ~ CA only.
My questions now are:
1) Is it worth getting the right distributor to help this truck reach its potential?
2) Are the 2 distributors so compatible that my Pertronix ignition parts (#1261) and coil (#40511,40k, 3 ohm) with match up with either?
Im not against getting a new upgraded dizzy if theres a clear advantage. Thx!!
the distributor you will be fine, if it is working properly already. they all work the same, the only difference is the centrifugal weights and the springs, which can all be changed anyway.
the problem you'll run into: any OEM-style distributor you buy at this point will likely be remanufactured...which means you don't know what you're getting.
whether you use what you've got, or buy a new one- you're going to need to verify the advance curve yourself.
like Harte said- a big cap could be an improvement, particularly since you're switching to a high-voltage coil.
i think you're over-thinking this one.
go ahead and put the pertronix in.
Stock single bbl. The vacuum is hooked to a port on the passenger side of the carb. Looks like the only option for it.
While we're at it, if you had a suggestion for a new intake and carb set up...Im all ears. Ive read a number of threads about how great someones 500cfm, 650, or QJ is. I just want someone to say "get this intake, this spacer and this carb for the easiest and best performance upgrade. I dont want to port any spacer or modify a bunch of stuff. Im all about plug and play.
ok- this is about to get interesting. i kept thinking about your question as to whether the '71 dizzy would be better/worse than the '66 that the truck would have been wearing originally.
the reason this applies to you...you may still be running the spark-control carburetor...in which case the way your vacuum line is hooked up is hurting you.
read through that link, and see if your carb has the valve. if it does, you really need to find a source of manifold vacuum- you should see a marked improvement right off the bat.
The only markings I can find on that carb are that beautiful Ford logo on the firewall side and a small circular badge, just above the mounting bolt, on the valve cover side. It says 129. I also dont see anywhere else to plug in that vacuum hose. I did read the article and am not too interested in drilling my own port, so now what?
Btw, thanks a bunch!!
but first things first- does your carb have the spark control valve? it would look like a Holley power valve, screwed into the carb from the outside. like this: http://classicinlines.com/prodimages/Carb1VLOM.jpg
Yes it does. It looks just like that without the hoopajoop on the back that holds the heater hose. Mine has nothing back there except all the linkage.
Whats it take to load a pic in this forum? Im "not allowed".
Theres supposed to be a "manage attachments" link below the message box but I dont ever get that option. Im not using quick reply so Im at a loss.
It looks like this guys but with the linkage going in the other direction as this carb is mounted on the drivers side of the valve cover.
My Chilton says its a Ford 1100. Thats just based on the exploded view.
to post pictures directly into a thread, i think you have to host them somewhere else, (flickr, etc), then put the link in the thread.
but i checked the photo- looks like mine, which is an autolite 1100.
so- you've got some options, depending on your budget.
1. drill a port in the intake
2. switch to a later-model 1bbl carb (if it has manifold or ported vacuum)
3. find a carb spacer that has a vacuum nipple on it
4. put an adaptor on, and switch to a 2bbl v8 carb (which has manifold/ported vac)
5. go all the way- get a new intake and 4bbl carb
i've got a '65, so i'm going through the same thing. i've got a Autolite 2100 on the shelf, so I'm going with #4.
Someone needs to do some work on the functionality of this site. Its aggravating. Cant post a pick, cant delete a post, etc.
Anyhow, thanks for laying that out for me. I'll probably call Jegs or Summit and get a manifold/carb combo.
