"Asking for a friend"

Yes, I really AM asking for a friend. He has this Y block engine out of a 1954 Mercury Car. I am not familiar with Mercury autos. Can anyone do an easy identification with these pictures only? Thanks

The 54 MERC came through with the 256CI (EBY) FYB (Y-Block).

You would have to chase CASTING ID NOS. to actually determine what it is.

It does appear correct at a glance, but you really can't tell by looking.

You can identify the block and heads here, Y.
