converting distributor

On a weekend car-fix-it show sometime back, they should a plate that you could put on the distributor of older type autos to convert from points to a magnetic or electric type system. Anyone know who makes these?

Few companies that offer an electronic conversion kit to replace points in your distributor.

Mallory
Pertronix
Probably a couple more, can't think of them off the top of my head.

As a thought:

You could also get a later model OE duraspark II distributor/coil/ignition module for about the same money, your local autoparts store would have a reman distributor and the coil/ignition could be bought new, last I checked they were $20 each for the coil/ ignition box and the distributor varies in price, I think I paid $65 with a core.

You can get an HEI distributor for the inline 300, drop it in, connect one wire, your done, basically a GM style distributor top with a ford 300 shaft/gear.

If you really wanna spend some money, you can pick up an aftermarket distributor/coil/ignition box for the old 300.

skip the duraspark setup. nothing but issues and is power limiting. go to www.summitracing.com type in points conversion and find the crane cams xr-i setup it is 70.00 and takes 15 mins to install and has a built in adjustable rev limiter.

I know its not the best but adequate for stock to mild applications, do you have any literature/links/etc., as to what extent it limits spark energy? I'd like to look it over, Thanks. I always "thought" the duraspark coil had a negative role in the spark output, more so than the ford module.

Ouch, sounds like you were having a string of bad luck, first person I've heard of to have that much trouble with a duraspark module or in your case modules, could it have been an underlying electrical problem?

I have had DS II on my 82 for all of its life with one module change!
You can go to a bone yard and get most of the things you need to convert to DS II for cheap!

This is interesting, I haven't had any trouble at all with DSII. I've got DSII in 2 of my vehicles, the '84 F150 & '65 falcon. The truck was all ready converted when I got it, but I did the falcon myself. I used a complete set-up from a junk-yard with no modifications (did replace the cap, rotor, wires, etc.) & its been one of the best things I did to that car.
