Had a weird issue backing up with a trailer today. Reverse wasn't working very well, and the temp gauge spiked to H in just 30 seconds or so. Turned truck off to let it cool down each time. Got home from my job and then lost reverse completely. I mean it wants to go, but just isn't pulling much at all.
Also the transmission was making a new whining noise on the way home (just before reverse went out).
Guess it's time for a rebuild or a new one.
What options are there for a new or reman 4R100? I heard about a heavy duty version, should I look into that if I plan on towing equipment (8k lb track loader)?

Not so unusual, backing up with a trailer is not something the 4R100 is great at and will heat it up in a hurry. Best thing to do is back up in 4 LO which will make it easier on the tranny. Incidentally shutting the truck down with an overheated transmission is about the worst thing you can do, once shut down it has no ability to cool at all..
Just went through the process of getting a new transmission myself. I went with warren diesel in PA. Andy is a great guy to work with and even though my first transmission he sent me had a bad pump from the factory he got another one out to me as quickly as he could. $2600 for the stock plus trans which has all the updates with some upgrades also. He will install it for that price or he will ship it to you(shipping extra). Also comes with the 6.0 cooler.
Also talking to a shop in PA they don’t recommend monster. They had a customer get one and the warrenty process was terrible and customer ended up having to pay for everything rather than warrenty.
That Warren Diesel trans from KC Turbo for 3800.00 gives me a chubby... but, if towing alot..etc, id go with ford trans with warranty. At anytime/anywhere under warranty, theyll fix it

Must have been the stage 1? I know his stock ones are warrentied to either 425hp or 450hp. The ford warrenty is a nice one. Does cost a little extra though. Think it was $5300 for local PA dealer.

Will avoid. Also read the Monster BBB complaint page wow.
Looking closer at the Dieselsite unit ($3500 w their torque converter)
That was a bad, bad idea. Turning it off when it's hot traps the heat in the transmission and cooks it. Idle or fast idle in park or neutral to cool it down, don't shut it off.

It is relatively straight forward, but the transmission weighs 270 pounds, and if it's a 4x4 the transfer case isn't light, either.
Diesel Site has some good products. I have been a customer of theirs on more than a few occasions.
I did have some issues with one of their cheaper parts. After receiving good tech support, but no conclusion or fix action I simply smashed it with a hammer.
If I were in your situation, I would be looking for a good deal on a Ford HD4R100 since it is a robust transmission and comes with a nationwide warranty.
I believe the price is normally ~$3800 installed, but could be wrong. I am a ZF6 owner, so what I know about the 4R100 is only from interest and trying to lend some advice.

Where would I order this from? Would a local Ford dealer install or do I buy from a Ford parts house and install myself?
You could install it yourself if you have the tools, knowledge and time. I believe there are different part numbers for HD4R100 in relation to the different years of trucks, but again I am not 100% sure on that. From what I have read, some/most Ford parts counter employees will not even know what you are talking about when you say HD4R100. That is why it is important to have the part number that you need on hand.
I will see if I can find it for you with a search here on FTE.
