Dropped truck off at A1 this morning. Chris was very knowledgeable and professional, and answered all of my questions thoroughly. Shop looked super clean as I'd read.
In addition to the bulletproof transmission and 6.0 cooler install, I'm having him replace the up-pipes with bellowed units (stockers leak right now), and also replace u-joints and balance the main drive shaft.
Chris does great work and builds as good a transmission as anybody out there. A friend of mine beat on one of his transmissions with close to 500HP 7.3PSD for about 2 years and when he sold the truck the trans shifted and preformed as good as the day he put it in. Boosted 4wd launches and wide open runs from a stop daily. Another friend just had his done by Chris just recently and he gave him a military discount.
It looks like you made the right choice, will be looking forward to see how you like it. I figure eventually I will have two big expenses on my truck, injectors and transmission. I will seek out the best as you did without hesitation, no new truck for me I already have the best one.
Got the truck back today. Transmission feels great. The old one used to have nearly a second pause before reverse would catch (this was true even when I bought it). A1's Bulletproof trans works perfect. Shifts are quick and not too abrupt.
Going to continue breaking it in a little before I haul anything heavy.
Also they said to basically turn overdrive off when towing heavy stuff. Also, as others mentioned earlier - never use engine braking at anything higher than 35mph. Doing so will wreck the transmission.
They put in Dex III instead of Mercon V as before.
Quick update. The new transmission is working great. My old one would take a while before going into gear, especially if it was cold.
New one instantly goes into gear no matter how cold it is. I've pulled a few moderately heave loads after break-in, and have had zero problems.
I'm also making sure to turn off overdrive when towing heavy stuff, and also, when backing up with a load to use 4x4 low (even with the front hubs off).
