Is the fluid burnt? I lost reverse backing a trailer in also and my forward gears were not happy but I only had to drive a mile home from where I was dropping the trailer. You may want to check your line pressure bolts before you get a new trans, that's all that was wrong with mine and a lot if other people's. If the fluid is burnt well it has to come out.
Yes if your trans is junk do the up pipes while it's out.
Will the diesel site reman handle backing trailers up significantly better than stock?
Yalking to Andy at warren diesel he said they still recommend people to use 4lo when backing up trailers even with like a stage 3 build. They do upgrades and enhancements but the reverse is still to torquey and can break it again. If you have manual 4x4 you can just put it in “2lo”. You can do it with the electronic version to but requires some modifications I believe.

I smelled and couldn't detect a strong burned odor. Maybe a little burned? I'm not sure what I'm smelling for tbh. The Mercon V is still pretty red from when I replaced the lines a month ago. I believe that the hole in the old line allowed a lot of fluid to drop before I caught it, and that may have been the beginning of the end for that transmission.

Where are the line pressure bolts? I just replaced both hard lines, and none of those joints are leaking if that's what you are meaning to say.
A trans flush will not bring back reverse. Something is mechanically wrong and new fluid won't fix it.
The feedbolts (you called them line pressure bolts) are worth checking before replacing the transmission. You have to drop the pan and the valve body to get to them.
There were two transmission rebuilders that used to get higher recommendations than ford. What happened for ford to become #1 on the list?
Again, I am a ZF6 owner, so I am only repeating what I have read here from other 4R100 owners.
The two rebuilders I think you are talking about would be JW and BTS. JW has had a lot of negative comments about his warranty service over the past year or two. BTS is still a top choice, but that comes at a price and he has one shop for warranty repairs.
From what father, the HD4R100 is no slouch and can be serviced all over the country. It should be a serious consideration when not looking for a 500 HP transmission.
I know buying something based on the warranty and it breaking is not right, but it is something we all do.

I have considered myself fortunate for some time now. For years I pulled a GN about once a month, and with the 7.3 cooler until 2017. This truck is my daily driver.
Most of the maintenance/repairs have been low cost, normal. As in nothing special.
Mark, above just gave very sharp advice. For everyone still on the team........If you get around to doing a service on the trans, problems or not. It's worth a few minutes and a few bucks to drop the body and re-torque and check the feed bolts. Common symptom to replacing vs repair (Cheap).
Mine failed, much like the OP. Had it rebuilt with a tugger and TC. I was given the op to watch the process. He stuck his finger in three times and said that was probably the problem, but it's on my stand now, so we're going thru it.
Burger King was right across the street, so I had two whoppers and walked back over. By the time I used 300 gallons of his toilet water, I learned two things.
Bringing my truck in tomorrow morning. He's going to install a fully rebuilt 4R100, 6.0 cooler, and new uppipes while the trans is out. Cringing at the cost, but I won't be worrying like I would if I bought one of the $2000 reman transmissions.

I knew I wasn't calling them the right thing and also knew you were here to clear that up for me.
OP you have a good opportunity to save yourself a lot of cash by checking those feed bolts. Unless this is an excuse for you to upgrade, if that's the case I get it.
Yes about 40 mins away. I know they guy gets a lot of flack but Powerstroke Help recommended A1 Transmission. A1 pretty much only does Ford truck transmissions and advertise that they are 4R100 specialists (no other trans models in their business logo, just 4R100).
4000 includes a triple disc billet torque converter. Does not include a billet input shaft though Chris said I won't need one unless my truck was tuned and putting out more than 600hp.
