Morning guys,
Yesterday was a bad day.
Truck started up as normal Wednesday morning to work. I did the same when going to lunch. I turned the truck off when ordering lunch in the drive-thru. Then cranked it up and pulled forward and that's when it stalled and died with no intentions of firing up again. Truck is 2002, 7.3 with over 500k miles on it. I'm the second owner since 2003-2004. I run synthetic oil and have a bypass oil filter. It has always had a Gold Super Chip in the PCM and has never caused any problems. I also have an Edge Engine Monitor hooked to the OBD port. Did not pull the PCM and remove the chip though due to time constraints. I had it towed to a 7.3 shop in Ringgold, GA.
So my buddy and I did the following prior to calling the tow truck:
*Swapped CPS with a new one, no go.
*Strong, almost new batteries with new terminals.
*The Edge will not communicate with the truck.
*My bluetooth OBD Link will not communicate with the truck either.
*Oil level in HPOP is good.
*Sump oil level is good.
*Fuel pump will not run unless we run a hot wire from battery to pump.
*WTS light comes on.
*Fuel tank is almost full - have done the H&H mods with a Dahl pre-pump filter.
*Fuel bowl heater has been disconnected and tapped up for a long time.
*I can't recall if the tach was moving during a crank cycle.
I really hated having to tow it to a shop but my health this past year has limited my ability to wrench on this truck. I had a serious discussion with the shop owner regarding "throwing parts" at the engine and expecting me to pay for them even if the part did not resolve the no start issue.
Any advise, help, guidance would be appreciated. I was on this forum under username "lhud" but somehow could not log on and then changed my username to "AubieTN".
Thanks very much guys for your help with everyone in so many areas - great forum!
I don't understand the name change as AubieTN registered 12 years ago. Other than that number 1 is pull the chip. How is the fuse for the cigarette lighter in the dash? I think it's #3 and it runs the OBD port as well.
Walleye,
I normally would log in on either my home computer or at work. It got to a point that I could not log in at either place with the original user name and password. So, I changed to another user name. I wanted to request one of the moderators to fix that for me but never asked.
Yep, I've instructed the shop to check out the chip first to see if that allows the truck to start or for their scan tool to communicate with the truck. I think my cigarette lighter works as I use it to charge my phone at times.
As my buddy and I suspected it was the corrupted Gold Super chip that caused the "no start" issue. The shop, Dynamic Diesel pulled the chip and installed my leaking AC hose, pulled a vacuum and recharged with R-134a. Picked the truck up yesterday evening and all is well. Just now drives like a dog without that chip. Will start looking into some help for a little additional horsepower to provide some spunk for the ole babe. I regret not pulling the chip but that forced me to let them do the AC hose R&R even though I could have done it as well.
