2000 F250 222,000 miles No mods having to do with transmission other then temp gauge.
While pulling my toy hauler. Had 2 clunks and slight lunges. Set the trailer up by backing with no problems, drove about 1 mile, turned off truck, got back in and no reverse, made sure fluid level was good, drove about 3 mile and at 25 mph never went out of first gear. Whent to park it and as I moved it from drive to park I went through reverse while it was rolling at very small speed, reverse started working some. What the heck?
Of course this happens 400 miles from the house. First question, anyone have any ideas? Second, anyone live in Stuggart, AR? Third, anyone know what it cost to put a rebuilt tranny in?
Steve, I really wish I had a good thought on this. My guess is you are looking at a new tranny in the near future. I would contact BTS in Lead Hill, AR (north of you about 200 miles). They can build you a tranny that is built to last, with a guarantee to match. Not cheap, about $4500 or so.
Thanks for the lead but unless they can install it here in Stuggart before Tuesday I'm out of luck. I need to be back in Fort Worth before Wed, Thur morning at the latest.
Ford quoted me $3,380 for an installed rebuilt, $1100 more for the "HD" version. When I asked "what makes it hd?" , he didn't know. No thank you. I went with a local reputable transmission shop where I was given a landry list of improved parts and upgrades to make my tranny truely HD. Cost just over 3 grand with 4 yr warranty. Yes please!
Well was able to get a shop to tow it in on Friday. Transmission was toast. To tow it in, drop and replace tranny, remove and replace transmission cooler which was required for transmission warranty, all fluids, 9% tax total was $3850. Not too bad when you consider that I was up a creek without a paddle. Got the truck back Tuesday afternoon.
We were lucky that this happened where it did. It could of happened on the road or who knows where but it happened at the show after we had set up our booth and trailer. Many people helped us during this process from the vendor next to us who drove me to Walmart and to find propane, a friend pulled our trailer back to the show and helped us load the booth back up then took the trailer back to the place where we were staying, on and on...
