Headliner project (fiber optics)



Ever tired to draw a perfect oval? Not real easy 🤔


I’m attempting a custom headliner idea with a new plastic ABS headliner from LMC. I’ve seen the Rolls Royce factory fiber optic headliners before and thought maybe this would be a neat custom touch to this old truck without changing the looks of the outside which I’ve kept as close to original as possible. My idea is to sketch out the FORD logo on the headliner (could be interesting) and then use my fiber optic kit to illuminate the logo. Plus add some other little “stars” and what not around the logo. First time I’ve ever done this so feel free to learn along with me haha

Sketched the logo as best as my artistic skills will let me lol. This will be my template to poke the holes the fiber optic strands will follow to light it up. Wish me luck!

man that green is really poppin! the most thing thats holding me back is i didnt know what kinda primer to use i hate to sand it all down and have it rust up on me putting the wrong primer on it, some people say strip it then use some kinda sealer primer, then do bondo work and others say to strip it then do bondo then use some kinda primer on it, mine would be in primer over a year im sure so it would have to endure sitting outside in snow.

I personally sanded my entire bed down to bare metal with P80 sandpaper first to see what other PO have done (pulling dents, rust that had been painted over, etc.) then I did my hammer dolly/body filler work. After I was happy with the majority of my body work which my bed needed A LOT...I sprayed on the Nason primer I have loaded up above in this thread. Sprayed about 3 good wet coats on it, blocked it down to find my body work imperfections, fixed those, and then sprayed the same primer but this time in 4-5 wet coats. I’m going straight to wet sanding my primer now, then will spray Nason Select gray sealer on to protect any light or bare spots of metal. I think if you got your truck to the sealer stage before winter it could sit outside in the weather without too many issues! Just my thoughts, feel free to ask any questions you might have about the products I used

i will ask ?'s if i get to it forsure. i was thinking taking the bed off and putting it in my pole barn and do that first as its the worst

Here’s the fiber optic kit I ordered. This one is 450 strands of 3 different sizes with 9.8ft of fiber. Came with remote, led light engine, drill bits for the fiber sizes.

Don't know if you mentioned this but I'd think about wiring the logo to light up when the doors open... like the dome light. Awesome build so far. Looking forward to more of your progress. Maybe I'll make some on my truck lol

ya know good thought hadn’t even considered it! My only issue I can think of is that by wiring into the courtesy/dome light wiring, the logo would only be on while the doors are open or the dome light is turned on (headlight switch all the way to the left on my truck.) I wouldn’t want to have my dome light on while I’m driving lol could get a tick annoying

Headliner update


Just using a Dewalt flashlight to light the ends up. All that’s left is to clip the end flush with the headliner surface and install! Should look neat!

Logo fibers ran and now working on misc. star patterns

You can wire up the fibers after the dome light and wire in a one way diode. Then wire a separate switch for the fibers that you can turn on. The diode won't let electricity run backwards so when the switch is flipped it won't turn on the dome light. But turning on the dome light still turns on the fibers.

More simply put: Wire the dome light and a switch to a relay and then the relay to the fibers. One way diode in between dome light and relay to not back feed when switch is flipped.

I can draw ya up a diagram if you want.

You could also wire a 3 way switch (on/off/on) on- always on/ off- off / on- on with dome light

Here we are! Got a few spots that need tuned in.. a few in the “r” and one on the oval. Overall pretty impressed so far! Now the fun part...getting the thing back in the truck
