1995 F150 5.8 Eddie Bauer, bought used, 180k miles. Drove it for 2 days, speedo stopped working, wont go over 45 mph. Searched the forums, sounds like a speed sensor. Tranny is E4OD. Only has rear diff. speed sensor. Replaced it with OEM part. Nothing. Gave up, brought her in to the shop. "Transmission guy" at the shop confirms its the diff. sensor. Worked for four hours. No speedo again, no more than 45 mph. Bad sensor?? Tried a third time. No luck. Any ideas? Experience? (This tranny does not have a tail mounted sensor.) TIA
Has anyone electrically verified that the wiring to the sensor is good? Looking at the wiring is next to useless, there has to be an electrical check. Has anyone checked for codes?
No Mark, no one including myself have checked for codes. I brought my OBD 2 with when I looked at it, but it is a 95, OBD 2 is only good on 96 and up. Wise to invest in an OBD I ? If so, do you know where the plug in is located? Thanks very much.
The plug is under the hood. I don't remember exactly where. You can invest in either an OBDI reader or a paper clip. https://www.troublecodes.net/ford/
Thanks Mark. Found the plug, tried the paper clip. No flashing. Bad ECM?? Buy OBD 1? Yes, but no engine light is on. Will it still pull trouble code? Check engine light comes on during starting as usual. Only idiot light that stays on is ABS light.
Mark, thank you so much for your input. The ECU was fine. Turns out the transmission went belly up. Only first gear works. When applying the brake and giving her some gas in any gear, a whirring and metallic clink can be heard coming from the tranny. Guess I cant complain. Paid $2k for her plus the $800 for a tranny rebuild brings it right up to the low end of book value. She has no rust, a near perfect interior, mag wheels and a great stock paint job. All in all I am pretty happy with her, even at $3k. I just wish the seller was upfront about the issue. Thanks again.
