I have a 1996 E150 with a 5.8L and an E4oD trans. Engine light comes on and computer says speed sensor A malfunction. The speedometer works. Where is the speed sensor that controls the transmission? Transmission works but does not go into overdrive and seems to be lost as to when to shift. Works fine in Drive 1 and Drive 2 but floats when in Drive. I replaced the sensor over the differential with no change results. any help would be appreciated
David
The vehicle speed sensor is the one on top of the differential.
Since you already changed that, it probably isn't the sensor. It could be a damaged tone wheel inside the differential or a bad wire between the sensor and the computer.
Unless this is one that has the VSS on the end of the speedo cable at the rear of the transmission....I can't remember that far back.
Look at the rear of the trans. If the speedo cable attaches there and there is a sensor with two wires, that's the VSS.
When the two wires are attacted to the sensor the speedometer works. When the wires are not attacted to the sensor the speedometer fails to work. Is it possible for the sensor to work for the speedometer and not the transmission control? I have looked and it does not appear to have a gear driven sensor or speedometer cable going to the transmission, just a wiring harness. Thanks again David
What is a PSOM, where is it and how can I Test it? Thanks David
The PSOM (Programmable SpeedOmeter Module) feeds the PCM the speed information and the PCM shifts the Transmission.
And YES the 1996 had a PSOM and that may be your problem but if the speedometer bounces a little it could be the a damaged tone wheel inside the differential.
Our church has a 95 e350 bus conversion with the E40d and a 460. When we first got it the speedometer started malfunctioning. Then it straightned out but the trans failed to shift properly. I swapped it out for another PSOM (complete speedometer) out of another one. Presto -- no more problems.
