2016 F150 XLT V8 Fuel tank upgrade?

Hello,

I have a 2016 F150 XLT V8 with a 6.5 foot bed that currently has a 23 gallon tank. I would like to find a way for FORD to upgrade my fuel tank to a 36 or 30+ gallon tank. Does anyone know how to do this without voiding the warranty and also to have Ford install it. I had one dealer tell me that it was not possible... Does this seem right?

There was a write up on another forum where a guy detailed this exact project with pictures. So, it is possible. I think he had to use ForScan and an algorithm to get the fuel gauge and MTE to recognize the bigger tank. It’s possibke he did it on a 2017, but I’m pretty sure it was a 2016.

I just went back to double check. They have done it on 2015 and 2016, so you can 100% do it. It looks like total parts price ranges from $500 - $700 depending on which dealer you choose. One of the guys said it took him less than 2 hours. It’d probably take me all day. LoL

You said you want the dealer to do it, so it’s up to them if they want to do it.

The guys that did it used ForScan to get the fuel gauge and stuff to work properly after the swap.

I’d like to just drop the link on here for you, but I don’t know if the mods will let us do links to other F150 forums. Maybe just search “23 to 36 gallon fuel tank conversion” that will bring up a couple different forums but you’ll quickly figure out the guy that did it.....or you’ll find another one that did it. Either way, you’ll get to see what is involved and then do it yourself or show what you find to your dealer and see if they want to do it. I’d expect the dealer to charge you about $1000 out the door for everything...but that’s between you and them.

Good luck

Yes, for something like this. You are not allowed to promote or cheerlead etc for other sites, but tech links are ok.

Thanks for the info 85e150six4mtod, I didn’t want to get in trouble. I appreciate you clarifying that.

Here are 2 links where guys have done the conversion. You’ll want to read both to get the full scope of the work and exactly what was needed to do it. One of them even has pics of the install. I’m not sure if both mention how to disconnect the fuel lines and tell where to find the ForScan procedure...but between the 2 threads, it’s all you need to know.

One of the guys bought a used tank, he got the whole thing for $200 plus $136 for shipping. Prices for all the parts ranged from $500 to $800 depending where they bought them. There are complete parts lists with the Ford part numbers in one of the threads.

Here they are:

Cheers!

I can't imagine why a dealer would refuse to do this job. As long as you use all Ford parts and are paying the going shop rate I can't see them turning down your money.

I was optimistic after reading this thread about converting my 23 gal tank to a 36, sounded very do-able. I checked with my local Ford dealer, where we bought the truck, and was told nope, to complicated and the techs didn't want to attempt it. So I called around to other Ford dealers in the area, and was told nope as well. Couple of them told me it would be an EPA violation since the truck passed EPA standards based on its current setup, interesting. Looks like a dead issue, but not overly disappointed, since when we make long trips, hauling the car trailer, and getting 10 mpg, I usually have a plethora of 5 gal gas cans with us, gas is always cheaper near home than near the tracks.

The part about the EPA violation is B.S. Ford sells the truck with a 36 gallon tank. EPA certification is for each emission related configuration that they sell not by VIN.

I haven't looked but I'm willing to bet that someone makes an auxiliary fuel tank for the F150 and even if they don't, a decent non-Ford shop should be able to install the bigger tank as long as they use all OEM parts.

I'm not a big fan of carrying extra fuel in gas cans. I've seen what can happen in a crash with gas cans.
