As I was sitting in the dealer waiting for my truck to be delivered I had lots of time to ponder why things are the way they are. I was informed by my salesman that they were just filling the tank and it would be ready. I thought to myself "Nice, free gas".... Then I thought about the small fuel tank and wondered:
"Does Ford make the tank intentionally small to save money on every sale?"
Ford sold: 661,198 pickups in 2016. If they were to make all fuel tanks an average of 10 gallons larger (at $3 gallon) that would cost them almost $20mil dollars extra. Having crawled under my truck last night its clear there is plenty of room for a larger tank. Now this is probably not the true reason but it was a good time killing conspiracy theory lol
This may be one of those "the glass is half full / half empty" scenarios.
Our old MY2000 F250 CCSB was equipped with a 29 gallon tank. It would take 22 gallons when the gauge read "empty".
Our new F350 CCSB is fitted with a 34 gallon tank, and it will take ~30.5 gallons when the DTE reading is "zero". I feel i picked up over eight gallons with this new "small" tank.
My old F250 had 2 tanks. 19 and 18.2 gallons. My MPG was probably lower however.
The post was not really about whether or not people are happy with their fuel tank size I guess. It was a passing thought/joke about a fuel tank size Conspiracy lol.
I suspect Ford does a fair amount of due diligence in determining what tank sizes to offer. Range is certainly a concern to Ford (and the other guys) and their customers, and I've no doubt that this concern is behind the effort that Ford is making to fix the 34 gallon tank fiasco.
You pay for the fuel. It's listed as a charge on some of the paperwork. (I don't remember which form it was, offhand.)
Yup - I asked about the $115 charge on the order print out and my guy said the dealer gets reimbursed for the gas from Ford. Seriously doubt the tank size has anything to do with the dealer or ford filling it. You're paying for it in the end. Looking forward the 48gal tank. I wouldn't have anything but a LB as SB is useless to me. I'd take a 10' box if they offered it!

on DORA There is a 10gal fuel charge. The rest is the dealer.
And don't Forget that a bigger tank is heavier so less payload.. take an f250 diesel full load that is sub 2000lbs payload and put a 48gal...that would start to suck

My truck is a LWB and my charge was around $125, as I recall.

Maybe because you are in the us ? Here all vehicules are near empty. When I bought my 2013f150 , it was so low on gas that I feared I couldn't make it to the station. Lesson learned, it's now part of the deal when I buy new trucks !
Our truck's order summary from our dealer included a $72.76 fuel charge in the "Invoice" column; the truck was delivered to us with a full tank of fuel.
