i have 2 tanks in my truck 90 f150 can sombody tell how much fuel they are suppose too hold i just bought the truck and dont know too much about it but i cant seem to get any more than 24 gallons in them surley for didnt just put two 12 gallon tanks in the truck or is my gauge off? thanks , john
I'm sure someone here can come up with the exact quantity for each tank but right now I forget. They hold approx. 20gal each. One holds 19+, I think it's the front one. And the other holds 20. Of coures that is bone dry, and you hopefully will never reach that point. Personally I have never put more than 17gal. in either tank, and that was after running well into empty territory late one night. Hope this helps.
It does sound like your gauge is reading inaccurately. Remember that excess fuel is returned to the front tank only. The tanks gernerally hold 19 gallons each in a long wheelbase truck. A short wheelbase truck will have a front 17 gallon tank. Pick one tank to run on, the front preferably and run it until it hesitates. The reason to pick the front tank is the fuel return issue. You will have your rear in reserve and be able to determine for your self what kind of inaccuracy your gauge is giving you. Once the gauge reads empty, log the miles to actual empty.
Fuel the front tank up pretty quickly and you'll get a true quantity.

Reason: addt'l info, whoops
The fuel is supposed to return to the tank it came from. If it only returns to the front tank you have a problem that needs to be corrected. There is an active thread on this forum about this.
I have had fuel return to the front tank from 0 miles through 243,000 on the F250 as well as the F350 prior with over 500k miles. I am confident that it is operating properly in this truck as well as others I have owned. As far as that you can trace the return line to the front tank as well with no provision for return to the rear tank unless it is first returned to the front tank. Replaced the fuel pump and have been in the system personally. Am satisfied.
