I purchased a 52 mercury M3 ( basically the same as a ford F1-F3) a few months back from Canada, I went to the DMV to get a Vin verification. When I called they told me I only needed to bring the cab because that's were the Vin plate is located. When I got there they said I needed the whole truck and that my vin plate was screwed on and not riveted on. They also told me there would be a Vin # on the left frame rail over the front wheel, I found one on the left frame rail but under the rear quarter panel on the top of the rail so if you had the cab on the truck you couldn't see it. My question is does any of this make sense?

Have them check the top of the right frame rail. That is passenger side or curb side. At least that is where they are on domestic F series. I took my whole driving, running '49 F4 to the Citrus Co tag office and was very nice to the girl who inspected my numbers. She accepted the screw on tag that did match the numbers on the frame. She was professional and I did not make her get dirty to look at the frame numbers. BTW, know what that truck weighs before trying to get a FL tag for it.
Edit: BTW, Don, welcome to this section of FTE. What are your plans for the truck?

 

I have a title, but because it came from Canada you have to take it to a state DMV. I found one on the left side just over the steering box and one that is qestionable just under the rear quarter on the left. This truck was in real bad shape from being on a farm for 65 years. I will not be able to fully restore but want it to have that look.
Was your vin screwed on?

As I recall, Canadian 48-52 did have the number on the left (DS) rail near the steering box. From a previous thread on Canadian VIN's:
"On our left hand drive frames it was stamped on top of the rail in the engine compartment by the steering box and further down under the cab. Your best bet is to check both sides under the hood."

For what it is worth, here are photos of some of my 1951-1952 Canadian Ford and Mercury trucks. All have the serial number screwed onto the center of the firewall above the motor. No rivets.

Sorry for the delay, sounds like you got the information you requested.
FWIW, the glove compartment tag on my F4 os screwed on, easiest to see and this is what I showed her if I remember correctly. The tag on the firewall passenger side is riveted on with steel rivets that were salvaged and reused when I returned the tag to the truck.
Let me mention again, know how much the truck weighs prior to attempting to tag it. I had weighs as listed here on FTE but a supervisor at the tag office had to verify it in their dusty old books which took a while. Had she not found this in her archives, I would have had to have the truck weighed.

Thank, at this point all I’m doing is getting a Vin verification from the State because the title is Canadian. I”ll make sure I get it weighed be for I go to the county DMV. At this point i’m Going to finish the truck first, the state wants the truck all together before they will give me a Vin check and I can’t see putting it together and then having to take it apart again. I think with all the help you and others have given me, I will not have a problem. I have 7 pictures of Vin # screwed on with the same screws that mine has. I also found the Vin stamped on the frame rail just over the steering box. You guy’s have really helped me a lot.
