The Canadian Vin Info Thread

This information have been gathered from chassis and body part catalogs and the master 1948-60 parts catalog. It is accurate to the best of my knowledge.

1948-1952

To facilitate the servicing of vehicles and assist in selecting correct parts for a particular vehicle, an identification numbering system was introduced and recorded on an identification plate on all vehicles produced by Ford Motor Company of Canada, Limited, from the beginning of 1946 models. This identification plate is located on the center of the cowl or dash panel under the hood.

SAMPLE PLATE

Engine - 6G-1829 Model - FH81
Trim - MC-18001
Serial - FH81H48-5001 Paint - M-1722

Explanation of the above plate is as follows:

ENGINE NUMBER

The first digit of this number indicates the model year the engine was originally built, “6” indicates “1946”. The letter in the engine number indicates the piston displacement of the engine, and the type of transmission as follows:

“E” indicates 239 cu. in. piston displacement with 3 speed transmission
“EE” indicates 239 cu. in. piston displacement with heavy duty 3 speed transmission
“J” indicates 239 cu. in. piston displacement with 4 speed transmission
“P” indicates 239 cu. in. piston displacement with 4 speed transmission, passenger camshaft
“G” indicates 239 cu. in. piston displacement with 4 speed transmission, truck camshaft
“Q” indicates 337 cu. in. piston displacement with 5 speed transmission

Engines are also numbered consecutively as they are produced at the factory. This engine number is “1829”, making the complete engine number “6G-1829” which is stamped on the vehicle serial code plate.

TRIM MC-18001

The trim number indicates the type of interior trim in the vehicle. This number denotes a certain colour and type. Therefore is should be quoted on all orders for any replacement trim material.

SERIAL CODE FH81H48-50001

This number is the serial number of the entire vehicle. It indicates the vehicle model type, the branch where the vehicle was built, the model year, and consecutive number of the vehicle as it came off the assembly line.

This serial code consists of five major portions with a secondary breakdown in the first two letters:

Major Portion Breakdown

“FH” - model type 134” W.B. Truck - Ford
“81” - body type chassis and cab
“H” - assembly branch Home Office. “V” would mean Vancouver, etc.
“48” - model year 1948. “49” would be 1949, etc. P is 1952.
“5001” - consecutive job number at assembly plant

(B) Secondary Breakdown

“F” - first letter indicates model designation - Ford
“R” - would designate Mercury
“H” - second letter denotes the wheelbase 134”.
“C” - 110” “D” - 114” “F” - 122”
“M” - 158” “Q” - 176” “U” - 194”

This secondary breakdown is explained further on the next page under the column “Serial Prefix”.

MODEL - FH81

The model number denotes type of model, i.e.
“FH” - 134” wheelbase truck,
“81” - chassis and cab

PAINT - M-1722

M-1722 denotes the colour and type of baking enamel used on the outside of the vehicle and not supplied for repairs. Therefore, it will be necessary to order the corresponding Air Dry enamel for service. A listing of all enamels is included in this catalogue.

NEW MODEL SERIES

In order to simplify the ordering of spare parts, a new model series has been adopted for trucks (effective with 1951 catalogue publication). This new symbol will be used under the “Model” column throughout the body of out truck parts catalogue and eliminates the model series “F47”, “M47”, “F68”, “M68” and wheelbases, etc., used in our previous 1948-9 truck parts catalogues.

The new symbol “C” will now denote 1948, 49, 50 and 51, 1/2 ton 114” wheelbase F-47 and M-47 truck chassis, as described in the following “Model Type” Chart.

A third letter is used to denote standard or special units:

A - Standard J - Parcel Delivery
B - Bus U - Dump
D - Diesel W - Cab-over-Engine

A letter follows the body code to denote Standard or DeLuxe cab:

A - Standard B - DeLuxe

Example: GHW81BH51-5001 is a Ford 3 ton 134” W.B. C.O.E. with DeLuxe Cab

GH - shows it is a Ford 3 ton 134” W.B.
W - shows it is a C.O.E.
81B - shows it is a Chassis & DeLuxe Cab
H - shows it is a L.H.D. built at Home Office
51 - shows it is a 1951 model

Wow, Nathan, you've compiled an outstanding reference. Interests me to see the differences between US and Canadian specs. As I'd understood, there was no Canadian F-2, and the F-3 was called a one ton north of the border. The F-4 was the one ton in the US, but in Canada it was a 1.5 ton. And I learn the F-4 could be either a 134" or 158" spec., as opposed to the US having only a 134". I've bookmarked your thread, and reps given. Thx. Stu

Thanks, hopefully it will help someone out. It took darn near forever to format a html table into a format that vbulletin will display correctly.

Stu, did the US F-5/F-6 get the 176" and 194" wheelbases? The Canadian ones with those wheelbases were standard equipped with the wide fenders/front axle.

I've always been curious about this "option" for 1951-52 F/M-3 trucks:

Its only mentioned in my 1952 supplementary catalog. It is a Timken axle. Uses 8 bolt front wheels from an F-2 and has 16" 6 bolt dually wheels in the rear. I assume the same bolt pattern as 1953-66 trucks. The wheels do have a different part number from the 1953-56 wheels.

I have a '52 Full Product Line brochure that shows the F-5 and F-6 available with 134", 158", and 176" wheelbase on conventional cab trucks. The F-5 school bus had a 158" chassis, and the F-6 had the 194". No other mention of the 194".

Your supplement reference is amazing! A DRW option on F/M-3s using a different rear axle. Can you tell from the Chassis Catalog if it was the Timken A150 as used in the '53 F-250 or the B150 as used under the F-350? From the cross section diagram the wheels have the same Firestone "RHP" outer rims as were supplied on F-350s beginning in'53. Stu

As far as I can tell it is a Timken 51524. The Timken A150 and B150 use different wheel bearings and axle shafts.

Some of the part numbers from the diagram are in the master catalog but there is no main listing.

This is what I can figure out:
Used 51-52
14" and 12" drums are listed
Used the same axle shaft as the regular pickup
12 - 9/16 18 right hand thread studs per vehicle with 7/8 nuts
16" 6.50 tires all around. Single wheels on front and spare.

Its just been a curiosity to me. Kind of gave me the idea for my DRW pickup. A bit of a precedent you could say

Hi there.
I'm a newbie and not sure if this is the right place to post this.
I have a bus here in New Zealand on a 1948 Mercury chassis. The Serial Number Code I have is C84BFS 9G22728F. I'm trying to find out as much info as I can on this chassis and your help would be really appreciated. Thanks, Phil

Your chassis was most likely built by Ford of Canada but no one is really sure if they were assigned a vin by Ford of Canada or Ford of New Zealand/Australia. Of the few that have posted here have had trucks completely stripped of all identification.

Is your serial number on a plate by Ford or by the builder of the bus body? If its by the bus builder it might be a number assigned by them.

Thanks Nathan.
There is a "Ford Motor Company of New Zealand" brass plate which says Model C84BFS, Engine & Chassis No. 9G 22728 F if that's any help. Originally had a V8 engine (now fitted with an English Ford 590E series 6 cylinder Diesel engine) 194" wheelbase.
Cheers,
Phil

Wow, can't believe how many paint colours were available in the '48-'52 time frame. The 22 that is on my 1949 M-47 Mercury is the code for Yosemite green, and that is what it is painted.
Very good information. Thanks for posting it Nathan.

Keep in mind the list above shows colours for cars and trucks combined. The list for trucks alone would be much shorter.

I will also add one that's not on the list; my 52 Mercury was originally finished only in primer. The color code is shown as 88.

The body part catalog books don't differentiate between car and truck with the paint codes. I figured it was easier to just list them all rather than miss one that was for a truck. Maybe someone with a Canadian car might stumble across this thread and be like, that's my paint colour! I'd hate to restore one of the cars to 100% original as there are like 50 different exterior/interior trim codes per year.

I have a vin plate from a 1948 Mercury M68 with a paint code - special.

Thanks for the info Nathan.
do you know if the chassis would have had a serial number stamped into it? and where this would have been located?
cheers,
Phil

It should. On our left hand drive frames it was stamped on top of the rail in the engine compartment by the steering box and further down under the cab. Your best bet is to check both sides under the hood.
