That's just surface rust. It started the first time I used the smoker. You'll notice it's in the places on the lids that had stickers on them. I didn't pull the stickers off and the first time I ran it, it rained.. so the moisture got under the stickers and that was that. Otherwise I've had the smoker for around 13 years I think. It's been out on the beach with me during a tropical storm so it's seen the salt air. For the first 4 or 5 years I'd put it in the garage during the winter, but not any more. Just too lazy. I am on my second set of grates for it, because I was too lazy to clean the first set off after they rusted, again just surface, but I still have those sitting in the shop somewhere. I'll need to replace the handles and the shelves as the wood is old now and splitting\falling apart. Maybe I'll do that in a couple of years.
ive had mine a couple years now and it sits outside 24/7... only place i got rust atm is where the springy bolt is on the stack... the temp gauge on top reads 450 even when theres no fire in it.. need to replace that someday..
first time i used mine i took a bowl of corn oil and brushed the exterior and interior of the grill heavily in the yard... lit it and let it burn in.. from time to time ill do it again.. i guess its helping preserve it...

I season the grates like I do my cast iron that i use regularly. I don't trust those style temp gauges. I use a digital gauge that reads both the meat temp and the grill temp. ThermaPro

Thanks James. It came out very tasty. Best part it is all mine. Found out the other day I somehow have lost 5 pounds. Not sure how, but have to change that.

i only used the gauge to try and keep it from over heating and burning the paint off... they recommend keeping it below certain temp (id have to look it up again) for that reason... lately ive gotten lazy though... started using non-stick cooking spray to hit the grates and inside shell with...
Yep, cooking spray is almost a necessity with cast iron grates.
Well this Saturday is packed, but it might be time to order the injector rings and cups for the 460 and work on getting that back together. Now where did I put the cash for the banks kit for it I wonder...

Kill two birds with one stone.
Throw a couple fatties on the grill. Good eats and will lube the whole inside of you and the grill...
Country sausage roll like Jimmy Dean's.
Naked Fatty is the roll with your favorite Pork Butt seasoning loaded on the outside.
Stuffed Fatties are when you roll it out flat and add other ingredients like cheese, peppers, pepperoni, what ever you want. Lay them on one end and roll it backup. Season the outside.
Smoke slow like a butt until 160*, let it rest, slice, and eat on white bread. (my favorite)
