I'm in the process of that right now. When I've bought new vehicles I've just sprayed Fluid Film everywhere underneath and inside panels such as inside the hood support structure and the bed support rails using the spray gun and extension wand I also bought from Fluid Film. The 2014 I just bought required the use of a needle scaler then Evapo-Rust. I let the Evapo-Rust soak for about 1/2 hr, respraying once in a while to keep the areas wet, and then used a Scotchbrite pad to clean off the rust. Hosed it all down with water and let it dry. There are some spots I couldn't get to above the gas tank and exhaust so for now I think I'll just use Fluid Film and next Spring take the bed off to get rid of the rest of the rust. I bought some rubberized rust encapsulator from Eastwood that I'll spray on once the bed is completely cleaned up and then follow up with more Fluid Film.
I've been using fluid film since I bought my 2011 in, I think. 2013. Seems to work well. I use the bulk spray with an airless paint sprayer yearly on the underbody then hit inside the rockers, doors, above the wheewell liners with aersol can and extension wand. No rust problems yet!
Is this something you guys have been doing by yourselves ? I wanted it to be a more comprehensive solution that will get the frame, under bed/cab/body so i don't have to worry about that stuff rusting out long term.
The first 2 years on my 14 I used Fluid Film spray cans, no problems. I decided to go the professional route this year. After doing research Corrosion Free seemed to be the best.
The place that did it let me watch, they coated it everywhere, they even did a little disassembly to get to hard to reach places. I could never coat the truck the way they did it. The recoat time is 18 months and with coupons and tax I paid just under $300. Corrosion Free also has do it yourself kits. corrosionfree.com
After all of that my dad has an 01 F150 that has stayed rust free by spraying any available oil anywhere he can about once a year. This is in the Chicago area on a truck driven to a mill every day. So don't overthink it but do something.
Go to Eastwood.com to check out their different types of rust encapsulators available for what you are looking for. I'm sure if you Google rust encapsulator you will find other vendors that sell their own versions. As I stated, I spray Fluid Film everywhere just like Buck268. If you don't want to do a yearly maintenance spray then you can try using just the rust encapsulator, which is like an undercoat but should be better at stopping rust. I'll use the encapsulator but also spray Fluid Film yearly. Rust encapsulator won't work on movable things like springs but Fluid Film will! I buy Fluid Film in 5 gal pails. Do a search in this forum for: So you wonder how long Fluid Film stays applied?
I had mine rust proofed by Linex They did the TST system. I take in every year for a inspect and touch up. They guaranty if it rusts they will fix it. Sense I did it when it was new. Used they dont warranty so well.
