Fluid film and frame rust

I have rust everywhere but mostly surface rust. For those who use fluid film, should I just buy a few cans and paint the whole under truck with it? Do you wipe off access? Thanks

you might get by with a couple cans, or if you have a couple vehicles to do yearly, buy a 5gallon and an air gun specifically for fluid film which will spray nice...see amazon. spray it on there, don't wipe off any excess, the stuff will thicken a little after a couple days too. great stuff, non-toxic, works as dielectric grease also. also, car ramps are helpful to get more room to spray. I sprayed a guys car out throroghly, cost me 15-20bucks in material, I charged him $70, he gave me $100.

Surface rust only with no deep rust - Stinky's getting this treatment:

I'm not using the exact same paint, but the Pematex is sold at the nearby Irish store. The treatment looked real good before painting, so we'll see how this plays out. I looked at POR-15, Rust Bullet, and a couple of other rust converters before settling on a few $6 cans of this.

Lowes, Autozone, Grainger, other places have it.

I started to play a little with it and plan to get it done...ahem...before winter.

Please keep this thread going, I think they use battery acid on the roads up here from Sept to August

zoro has it for $8.92 If you wait they have 20-30% off sales on everything too. I picked up a few gallons about a year ago to do my trucks, but still haven't gotten around to it.

I started using this stuff a few years ago and it works great. I would suggest buying gallon buckets of it on ebay with a air sprayer. I normally use about 1/2 gallon on my truck and apply it every fall. Just know that it does have a very different smell to it and your truck will smell for a few weeks and then it goes away.

Once you have rust - even surface rust, my thoughts go to a rust converter. Getting a rust protectant reminds me of the cow and barn door idiom.

Fluid Film has a base made from Lanolin. It creeps into the pores of the metal to seal out any water and air. I have used it on my salt water boat trailer for years. Slows the rust down to a snail pace. Probably not as good as complete rust removal and repaint. Works for me!

Is that the finish product on the Jeep bumper? Or is that just were you took the pics? Looks nice.

I started using it a few years ago to protect against rust while driving on the beach. It works great. Yes the truck will smell like lamb chops for a couple of weeks. It really sticks on there, I thought it would be a dripping mess but it barely drips at all.

Another option is to buy it in bulk and apply with a regular bug/weed tank type pump up sprayer. The long wand makes it easy to get it everywhere.

I grabbed that picture off the web. Here is an area that I've been working on:

Paint Over Rust to Stop Rust Permanently With Chassis Saver Truck & Auto Underbody Coating

The entire bottom of my truck was coated with this stuff this summer when the bed and cab were replaced. The frame, driveline, and entire bottom side of the bed and cab. Granted, I'll have to see what it looks like in 5 years to know how good it really is. They used the glossy instead of the flat black because the glossy has a smoother finish and dirt will fall off better.
