I agree. I don't want to use data on my phone for it since it is a work phone so I will just try and connect at home.

In case anybody is interested. Here is a comparison video I found out there.

If that were the case the use of the "black box" in vehicles wouldn't be admissible in court. Of course, they are, and are used regularly to prove that the owner of the car (and black box) was either "at fault" or not. It's evidence, and would be admissible in a court of law and subject to subpoena by either the plaintiff or defendant.
I'm sure most people are aware of this, but all new vehicles have a black box. They are similar to those use by airlines to record speed, braking and other data.
If you have a camera and are in a wreck, keep your mouth shut and put it away until you have your attorney review it, should the case go that far. If the other party lies about what happened and your video proves that as fact, nothing they say after that will have validity before the court other than "guilty your Honor".
I recall the case recently where a woman's parrot was used as key evidence in a murder conviction for killing her husband? As the police were investigating the crime scene, the parrot kept squawking "Don't f-ing shoot!, Don't f-ing shoot! That parrot belonged to her, and sent to her prison.
I realize parrots and video cameras are totally different, but the exact same principle applies. Its evidence that is subject to subpoena.
Bottom line. Be respectful to the officer and tell him you'd like to talk to a lawyer before you give a statement (or mention any evidence). I'm sure any active duty policeman would tell his brother to do the same.
Bob
So I guess with the truck having a black box, there is not much difference adding a camera to incriminate one's self... Though it would be clear as to 'who blew a stop sign' or who turned into who.

Thanks for posting that video. It was a very well done side-by-side comparison of the four dash cams. I thought the BlackVue was in the top two most of the time but did quite poorly in night vision zoom (horrible pixelation). The DOD was often as good or better than the BlackVue but reviews of the DOD indicate they have some issues.

I agree. Some of the night time with the license plates I wondered if it was camera placement in the car and the angle the light from the headlights was hitting.

I'm curious how the new one coming out next year will do at night. Also curious what that one will sell for.

First...a brief rant...why doesn’t the Thinkware site have a comparison chart of the models they offer? Sure would make it easier to select the model that best fits my needs.

Rant over. Now my question...
Can the functions such as lane drift be completely turned off on the models that have them? I hate to even pay for those features but it seems I have to in order other features I want.

thanks

It appears so. I pulled up the F800 manual and it says this.

You can activate or deactivate a safety camera alert system, a lane departure warning system (LDWS),
a forward collision warning system (FCWS), a low speed Forward collision warning system (low speed
FCWS), and a front vehicle departure warning (FVDW) and set their options.

Yes, I have had mine off since day 3 of ownership. Here in WV. the roads are NOT straight. The steering wheel was vibrating more than not. The button to turn it off is above the Nav screen. It doesn't reset itself automatically (thank goodness) so you do not have to push it every time you get in.

YES the features can be turned off individually and separately from each other.

The single most irritating thing about my Black Vue is the image of the rear camera is not reversed. When I’m in the truck facing forward and pick up the phone to look behind me cars that are on my left display on the right of the screen. It is very disconcerting to see cars coming up “on my right” when I’m in the right lane. I’d rather have the display look like what I see in the mirror.

one of the other reasons i went w/ the ThinkWare (F770) - was i am dissatisfied w/ the FORD alarm and even the add on cellular alarm - the LED light blinks so briefly that you can barely tell there is an alarm.

the ThinkWare dash camera has an LED Array that can be seen blinking (there are several pattern choices).

Does anyone power their dash cam from an always hot source? Wondering how much drain it would put on the battery if I was to leave it recording all day at work?

I do. My ThinkWare F770 uses ignition and (always) hot power sources - the always hot source is used for "parking mode" and the ignition source is a trigger for "continuous recording" as well as to trigger the start of "parking mode".

The power consumption / current drain is very low (ill measure it w/ an clamp meter later to provide specific levels later).

Thinkware devices have a (user programable) voltage drain protection setting, the default threshold is 12.2v.
Additionally there is a (user programable) Auto off setting (48 hours is the default setting).

From page 26 of the F770 Manual -

Device auto-Off Voltage :
Sets the voltage level for the dash cam to automatically shut down if the dash cam detects voltage level lower than configured value for more than 5 minutes in order to prevent from draining the vehicle battery

Device auto-Off Timer :
Sets the timer for the dash cam to automatically shut down in parking mode to prevent From draining the vehicle battery

Blackvue has an external device that you can set to run for a set amount of time or to turn off when your battery gets to a certain voltage.

When I had my BlackVue in the F250, I inadvertently left it on over the weekend. It completely killed the battery. All day at work, or even overnight is not an issue though.
Now I have the external power control to install so I won't have to worry about forgetting to unplug it.
