I have a 1969 f-250 camper special with a 360 and 4 speed on the floor. I was driving it after finally getting it running and all of a sudden I had to fight it to try and get it to go into 3rd, then moments later the shifter came completely out of the trans. After further inspection I found that the channels in the metal cap that allows that shifter to stay in had sheered off. I fixed the cap however a cannot seem to get the shifter to find and gears now. What am I missing here?
These 4spd np435 trannys this is one of there weak areas that craps out.
The shift stick ball locking ball cup collars an the shift stick pin grooves wears out.
There's there is a kit I got from a rebuilder that came with:
1. A stick shift ball seal.
2. A retainer shift stick ball cup.
3. A shift stick cup spring.
This was back in the 90's when I rebuilt the upper shift retainer receiver.
I also had the shift stick ball grooves welded up an recut the side pins grooves
for the pins with a file an a dremel tool.
Yeah I was debating whether or not to use the Dremel on the cap to make the grooves like you said. I will look into that kit for sure. I managed to fix the cap temporarily to where it can hold the spring like it is supposed to, but still can't find any gears except 3rd maybe, but it goes into 3rd so easily it makes me think it's not actually 3rd. Seems to go along the neutral channel fine.

1967/72 F100/250 2WD could have the Warner T-18 or the New Process 435 (NP 435) 4 speed. 1967/72 F100/250 4WD would have the NP 435 4 speed.
The shift lever retainer cap for the Warner T-18 4 speed (8MTH-7220) threads off/on.
The shift lever retainer cap for the NP 435 4 speed (B8T-7220-D) has two notches, is retained to the shift tower with two pins.
This cap must be pressed down by hand and held down while turning it counterclockwise to remove it.
Some people are unaware, use pliers or channel locks to remove it, which tears out one or both of the notches.
Based on your description, your truck has the NP 435.

look thru the shift hole. You will see three usually square rods ( for a lack of a better description. 1-2;;;3-4;;;reverse. take a long screwdriver or pry bar and slide the rods so all three cut outs are in a straight line. Thus putting tranny in nuetral. Then reinstall shifter.
