1963 Ford dump truck F600? shifter woes

Hi,

I hope one of your experts can help me. My neighbor and I share a 1963 Ford dump truck - it is a great old truck. Anyway I got it stuck and in the process of rocking it out, I broke the shifter lever off. On closer inspection, it had been broken previously and welded back on right inside the truck.

So, without removing the transmission... is there a better way to repair this shifter? I was trying to remove the stub that is still in the transmission but can't seem to figure out how to do that. There is a pin on the driver's side of the "mound" that protrudes from the transmission but it doesn't go all the way through.

The pin moves really easy...you can slide it in and out about 3/8" of an inch with your knife. Any thoughts?

Allan

Does the transmission have a dome shaped cup on the top of the trans shift tower with a pin on each side of the trans casing like this? If so those pins stay in there do not take them out. They hold the cap on. To take out the rest of the shifter stub you must push down and turn the dome cap counter clockwise I think it is. It may be hard and not want to push down turn easy as it's under tension from a spring underneath it so be careful as you take off the cap.

You're describing the New Process 435 4 speed shift lever retainer cap that has two notches. It's retained by two pins that protrude from the shift tower.

This trans was not available on 1963 F600's, the following was:

Warner T-98 shift lever retainer cap threads on/off. Once the cap is removed, there's a roll pin (7B125) visible within the threads that retains the shift lever in place.

COTT-7B125-A .. Trunnion (Roll Pin)-Transmission Gear Shift Lever / 5/8" long x 1/4" O.D. / Obsolete

GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH has 17 = 800-543-4959/513-731-3304.

put the trans in neutral, unscrew the retainer, pull the broken stub out and weld or replace the shift lever. Don't lose the little pin.....

Not to familiar with the bigger trucks. I figured they would have a different trans but hearing him say the pin on the side I figured I'd give it a try. I believe the trans in my slick 4x4 has the warner trans with the threaded cap. This pic is from my 71 crew 4x4. Glad to see you back Numberdummy.

Wow! Thanks for the schematic. The pin part looks right as the one in the schematic doesn't run all the way through. I am not sure that is the right tranny , I uploaded some photos as a new album... but not sure how to get them to you. The shift lever retainer cap certainly doesn't look like it threads off. Can you see the album I created and the two photos in it? Allan

That does not look like a T98 trans.

Could we see some pictures? Here is how.

But I got ta say becoming a supporter is the fastest and easiest way to post pics right from
your whatever pad/cell thing or home computer.
Few of us look in the users Gallery or album as you can see by your recent visitors.

It seems awkward, but whenever you "insert a picture" to one of these threads, the forum is looking for the picture somewhere on the web (which is always available) rather than from somewhere on your hard drive (which isn't always available).

Go to Image hosting, free photo sharing & video sharing at Photobucket and sign up for a free account. Then create an album for your truck. Upload any pics you want to post on FTE to that album. Have this album open on your computer when you want to post pics on FTE.

While you're making a post on FTE, select the pic you want to post from your Photobucket album. When the large version of the pic is open, right mouse click on it and select "View Image Info". The image info will be highlighted and will look something like this:
The best photos and videos | Photobucket

Copy that highlighted info (right click / copy).

When you have the spot in your post where you want the pic to be placed, select the "Insert Image" icon at the top of the post (looks like a mountain) and paste (right click / paste) the image info you copied in the highlighted box (just shows "http://" when it opens).

Your pic will be placed in the post.

Hope that helps.

Here's a tutorial Bob put together: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/67...-pictures.html Bob's link is not working. Can someone in the know tell me why?

How to upload pictures to the FTE Forums. - YouTube. Thanks Sam Rusty_Old_F250. Best we can find is that this video was done by Gundown64

If its an F 600, the Warner 4spd was standard with the Clark 5 speed and Clark 5 speed overdrive as options. If you have a heavier duty truck than a F 600, you might have a Spicer.
