I have a T18 4spd that needs a new shift lever. What year(s) truck will work on this? It came out of a '72 F150 (no F150's until 1975) not sure if its the original or not.
What's wrong with the shift lever you have now?
You sure this is a T18? Most 1965/79 F100/350's came with the New Process 435 4 speed.
To remove the shift lever on a T-18, the shift lever retainer cap unscrews.
The NP435 shift lever retainer cap has notches on it, is retained by two pins that protrude from the tower.
To remove this cap, it must be presseddown and helddown while turning it.
Thank you for replying.
It is a T18 tranny, the cap screws off. The shift lever spins around. The 'bushing' (not sure what its called, at the end of the lever that goes into the tranny) doesn't prevent the lever from spinning, the 'tabs' that fit into the slots on the 'bushing' are wore off, other than that the tranny shifts great and doesn't pop out of any gear.
The truck that the tranny came out of was an F100 not an F150, my goof.
There should be a pin the shifter articulates on. It is about .250 x .625
If it is not there you may want to make sure that it has not been dropped into the transmission. The slot in the shifter was worn on my shifter. I filled in with a welding machine then filed it back square. It now shifts crisp like it should.

Ugh if only you had posted about a week ago i just scrapped a t-18. i would've given you the dang thing for the cost of shipping. i think i may have another t-18 under the workbench at the shop. i will look tomorrow. what area are you in? i would suggest a junkyard. We have one in nashville called Pull-A-Part that would sell a shifter for probably 10 bucks or so
Thank you Blackwaterforge, I have that pin you mentioned, its in good shape.
Thank you Bill for the part numbers and the years of trucks they fit.
Thank you 66ford400ci, I'm in Utah, we have a salvage yard here that is called 'Pick-n-Pull', they have a '68 and a '71 F100, a '73 F150, a '70 and a '71 F250. I'm going there tomorrow to see if they have a shift lever that will fit. I'm taking mine to make sure I get the correct one. It is going to be a fun job since it is snowing here now. I'll post back and let you know what I find.
Again thank you very much to you all for the help. This site has been a tremendous help to me as I've been working on my truck.
Problem with a junk yard shifter is they are all 40 years old and will be worn out, Here is a company that has new shifters for the T18 in stock for about $60.00, The Borg-Warner T18 & T19 Transmissions - Novak Conversions
only problem is they come unbent so you have to heat the shifter and bend it to your liking. Not a bad deal though and you will be good for another 40 years.
pick,n,pull shifters are like 10 bucks and are installed in trannys so you can see if they are worn. measure from the ball to the tip. they probably won't let you take yours in and there are (at least) two different lengths. take any other spare parts you want, or need 'cause they don't leave em out long. (at least they don't at calgary pick 'n' pull)
