Is the console vault from Ford actually intended for firearms or just as a safe for valuables?
Console vault markets their products for both firearms and valuables. I've been using them for years and have one in almost all of my vehicles. I'm in and out of places everyday in MD, DC and Va where firearms are prohibited. The console vault does a good job for quick and easy storage / retrieval.
My wife works at a hardware store and they are a Liberty Safe dealer. The small vehicle vault options they have are very very nice and they all can be had with a fingerprint lock.
I have not found an ideal place to mount one but I am seriously considering just bolting it to the floor right behind the center console. My kids and dog can just use it for a footrest.
Tom Mix was a famous movie star cowboy way back when, his neck was broken during a crash by a metal suitcase.
Anything not secured basically becomes a projectile in a crash.
Most of Tom Mix films were filmed here in Newhall. That famous shot of him jumping that large span was Beale's Cut, three miles south of me in the Newhall Pass. There is an ongoing debate as to whether Mix made the jump or a stunt double.

There's about a half hour of my life I'll never get back, because he posted that picture. The internet is great for stuff like that. Losing hours of your life I mean. There aren't any known surviving films of the jump, as there was a fire at some warehouse. The pic looks photoshopped, or whatever it is they did back then.
