Late this summer I had my trans rebuilt and added an external spin on 20 micron filter, digital temp gauge and the 6.0 diesel trans cooler. noticed that the trans never broke 150 degrees during the summer but never thought more into it. winter is kinda here it hasn't hit 30 degrees for more than the night and warms back up mostly low 40 to high 40'school past two months . anyways I've noticed the temp gauge never breaks 115 degrees! this can't be normal with this cooler could it? what's gonna happen during the winter when it snows here and it's 20 degrees with wind chills? I don't know what the trans did before with the factory 5.4 cooler cuz the factory gauge always reads normal after five minutes of driving...
Ok that makes me feel better now, was worried since I see so many guys say theirs runs around 180 or a little higher. do you cover your cooler during the winter? I'm gonna make a cover out of rubber sheet I have

I don't drive mine in the winter so no I don't put a cover over mine. There is some guys on the Excursion side that run a thermostat on theirs which if I remember correctly keeps the fluid at 180 summer or winter.
I put the 6.0 cooler on my old 7.3 and covered half of it with cardboard like suggested above. I live by chicago and i had temps above 120ish once i drove a bit.
I was concerned with overcooling so installed the Derale. I have never gotten used to how quickly the temp rises to the 140-150F range but I've never been over 190F since I did the install.
My temps are probably higher than others see with the thermostat as I plumbed it after the radiator tank instead of before. One of these days I'll fix it but temps are fine and it looks so darn good the way I hooked it up.
Mark pointed out my error (don't know how I didn't see it) and it's on my list of things to fix next time I've got a project day.
